Page 2, News, Wednesday, February 3, 1988. Bits and Bites fr By Helene Ballard Hello! I hope you are all well in spite of the nasty flu and colds going around. Somehow this time of the year it's quiet; not much doing; all the residents are waiting for spring. The men's curling event took place last week and and I guess you all had a good time. I under- stand it's the ladies turn next; good luck! I have had several phone calls as well as folks stopping me uptown to ask me about 'Birchwood closing'. Well, I am only a resident here. To be truthful I don't like the idea; we all have our own rooms and our privacy. We can close our door and be quiet and enjoy a wee rest. : This is a big step to take; it will mean the loss of jobs and several of our staff have been here for years. I can't see how this can all come to pass in '89. Lots of peo- ple have to agree, land has to be bought, not to mention the miles of 'red tape'. I think I agree with some folks who say it would make more sense to repair this place then to builda '20-bed building'. I wonder where the money is' coming from. We can only hope that those at the head of this will Grace Baptist Church Pastor: Rev. Jim Johnson. Phone 824-2402. The essays were written with the Olympics as a research topic and the oems written by Gr. 8 students at Terrace Bay poems were written after students attended the torch ceremony in Terrace Bay. Share the Flame By Adam Moore The Olympic torch was on its way the flame was to arrive in Terrace Bay. The day was chilling, bitter, tart-- _The flame soon arrived and warmed our heart. The speeches went on and on all night As I thought of those who carried the light. It was a once in a lifetime chance to see The flame burning bright in front of me. The Run By Ken Mosley The air is cold and it's snowing The wind seems to cut you when it's blowing. You look ahead down what seems to be a lonely road. Your muscles ache but you stay bold. The traffic rolls by, Children in back seats wave high. Then you round a corner You see the cheering crowd. You can feel yourself growing proud. The crowd gives you an extra boost-- You feel proud and happy when you reach the end. Then the next runner goes and it starts again. The Olympic Games By Scott Merkley The Olympic Games started in about 770 BC. The first games occurred in Olympia, Greece. Athletics played an important part in religion and festivals. The religious festivals honoured many gods and Greek tribes. Olympic games continued over many years until today. The Olympic emblem consists of five rings, one blue, one yellow, one black, one green and one red. This emblem is located on the Olympic flag. Every four years the Olympic Games are started by the lighting of the Olympic torch. This is a torch which is car- ried across the country in which the Olympics are being held. Once the torch is at the Olympic stadium the large traditional torch is lit. The torch will remain lit throughout the games. There are two types of Olympics; winter and summer. Winter games have such events as skiing, hockey, figure skating and many more. My favourite winter event is hock- ey. It has been a popular sport for many years now. Usually there are seven teams in the hockey competition. The summer games are different events. Some summer events are track and field, field hockey, pentathlon, and gymnastics, to mention a few. I personally enjoy the track and field events. This year the Winter Olympics are being held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
