from page 1 The second, and more detailed part of the information-gathering process, is interviewing industry representatives, manufacturers of heavy equipment and trucks, rep- , resentatives of various safety organizations and trade associa- tions, and key government repre- sentatives. Meyer and two other consul- tants, Daniel Duic and Peter Morden, will do a number of these interviews. In addition; Don Cameron, co- ordinator for the heavy equipment operators' and log haul drivers' courses at Quetico Centre, will interview some industry represen- tatives in Northwestern Ontario. A total of 50 to 60 personal interviews will be conducted, mostly in person. However, isolation is a factor in a region like Northern Ontario, and some of these interviews will be done over the phone to save travelling costs to the more remote regions. Both Northwestern and Northeastern Ontario will be cov- ered in the study. The log haul industry part of the study will be focussed more on Northwestern Ontario, while the heavy equip- ment operating part will have a broader scope. As with any ambitious under- taking of this nature, the study presents some difficulties. "One of the challenges in this [study] is finding out how many heavy equipment operators and | SALA RASA RENAN log haul truck drivers there are," said Meyer. "No one really knows." Since many employers in these industries represent small compa- nies, they are often not listed in any directory or.in the yellow pages, and they may not adver- tise. Thus it is difficult to get an accurate count. "One of the things we hope to produce out of this Lake Superior Highlites By T.E. The final report will be-pre- sented at a combined meeting of Quetico Center's Board of Directors, and the Advisory Committee to the Training for Resource Industries program at Quetico Centre, January 21, 1988. "The results [of the study] will be used as an indicator of whether or not government sponsorship of training at Quetico Centre is important," said Don Cameron. In addition, the results will enable Quetico Centre to ensure that the training they currently offer in heavy equipment operat- ing and log haul truck driving is what is required by industry. A study of this depth on the needs of the log haul and con- struction industries in Northern Ontario has never been done before. "Our work will form a base of information that Quetico Centre can expand and update," Peter Meyer explained. The market study represents a change in these industries. It will make available the necessary information to ensure a better cor- relation between skills training and industry needs. Thank You Ken Lusk, Gail Fournier and Laurentian Publishing.
