They include novels, children's stories, legends, textbooks, biographies, poetry, coffee table books and a spy thriller. Northwestern Ontario books are defined as those written by local authors and/or about the region of Northwestern Ontario, occasionally straying to adjacent areas in Manitoba, Minnesota, and Isle Royale, Michigan. A literary locator map appears on the back cover, drawn by Iain Hastie of Lakehead University' s Geography Department. Elinor Barr compiled the titles and bibliographic information. Northwestern Ontario Books: A Bibliography is of spe- cial interest to people who work in libraries, government offices and educational institutions. The program is designed to help individuals in psychology, social work, speech pathology, social work, and students of native ancestry interested in working in designated areaS of - Northern Ontario. Bursaries are offered to encourage young professionals to look for careers in the northern part of the province thereby reducing the serious shortage of professional manpower needs in the north. The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines funds. the program while the Ministry of Community and Social Services administers it through its Northern Regional office in Sault Ste. Marie. Bursaries are awarded on a yearly basis to students who: -have lived in Ontario at least one year: -are Canadian citizens or indi- vidual granted landed immigrant Status and are attending college or university in Canada. $ Students must also providé proof of acceptance in a career offered by a post-secondary insti- tution leading towards a degree or diploma in social services, social work, speech pathology or a doc- torate in psychology. Every student who receives a bursary has an obligation to work in an area of the province desig- nated by the Ministry of Community and Social Services as an-underserviced area.'
