Boating accidents down Boating deaths down- Last year boating-related deaths fell 45 per cent when compared to 1985 on waters patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police. "During 1986, 55 people died in boating incidents compared to 100 deaths the- previous year. We attribute this dramatic decline to a marked change in the public's attitude about boating safety and impaired boating,"said OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson. Part of this change in attitude can-be attributed 'to the: OPP: Marine Awareness Program. While the main thrust of this pro- gram is public education, 250 officers of the OPP Marine Units will again be firm in dealing with violators this summer. When on patrol, each of the OPP's 105 boats will be equipped with an alcohol breath tester (the same type as used in patrol cars) to determine if the operator of a boat has been-consuming alcohol. Last year a total of 29,671 boats were checked by the OPP Marine [Inite. This summer OPP Marine offi- cers will be on the lookout for unsafe boats, overloading, lack of safety, equipment such as life jackets, careless waterskiing and reckless boating. "Having a safe boating season is no a accident. Only through public awareness of the rules of the waterways can we make Ontario's rivers and lakes safe for everyone,"said Commissioner Ferguson. Police Chief to leave post Following the resignation of the Township of Terrace Bay's clerk-treasurer, Terrace Bay's Police Chief, R.N. Phillips, has also announced his intents of leaving the community. Chief Phillips told the News that August 29 will be his last as Police Chief. As of September 1, 1987, Phillips will be the new Police Chief of Dryden, Ontario. Phillips said his decision to leave Terrace Bay is simply because he looks forward to policing a larger centre. Phillips, a native of Southern Ontario, said that he was offered the position, and quite simply, accepted. The Dryden Police Force is a fairly large one with about 15 men and five civilians on staff, Phillips said. The population of Dryden is about 6,500 people. "I've enjoyed my tine: here," Phillips said. "The merchants and the townspeople have been very co-operative. We've had a good _ working relationship which made for good policing- a good atmo-_ sphere. "The community programs have been exceptional- well sup- ported from the community." Phillips said he hopes future programs will continue to get the same support. Phillips and his wife Anna (Chief Lab Technologist at the McCausland Hospital) have three children, Drew, Scott and Meagan. Phillips said his wife has accepted a lab position with the hospital in Dryden. Many programs In the time that Phillips has been on the Terrace Bay Police Force, he has been involved Chief R.N. Phillips deeply with the schools. He said he appreciates the co-operation of che students and staff, as well as the co-operation in other areas from Kimberly-Clark, Minnova Inc., and all the.local merchants and the people from each commu- nity. Phillips said a good working relationship also existed with the service Clubs such as the Moose, the Legion and the Kinsmen. "The support of these clubs made some of the programs so success- ful," he said. Phillips also thanks Terrace Bay Council for its sup- port and co-operation in the last several years.
