The project was made possible because of the revenues received by the ministry through the sale of the new Ontario Resident Sport Fishing Licence. Ben Prince, services supervisor with the MNR in Terrace Bay, told the News that the MNR is "committed to expanding the fisheries program," and that this project is just part of that plan. Prince and Senior Services Technician Chris Hewson were at the scene last week to assist in building and forming the dock. Prince said that the MNR used to build and take care of access points. He said that at one time, many years ago, there used to be outdoor toilets and garbage bins at the Salem access point. Money for this type of upkeep for the MNR dwindled and the MNR basically stopped doing such work. But Prince said that now the MNR will be back into maintaining access points like the one at Salem. Prince wanted to emphasize that this Salem access point project was initiated by local residents who showed a lot of interest in the whole matter. When people do something like that Prince says they "should be recognized" for the initiative they've displayed. The major players who contacted the MNR about building the access ramp were Len Crockford, Burton Phillips, Bill Weaver and Jody Davis. Andre Theriault assisted in forming the ramp. One of the above persons was heard last Tuesday saying that the MNR was great about the whole affair. "We called them last Friday, and now it's Tuesday." A very quick-acting ministry indeed. It was Crockford who was instrumental in approaching the ministry about the project the News learned. The old ramp at Salem was taken out and fresh cement from Desrosiers was poured between the borders. Prince could not emphasize enough how good it was to see local residents and the ministry working together. (Photo by Ken Lusk). Anne Todesco By Anne Todesco Birds- Seagulls have been here by the thousands. It makes one pause to think that they were aware of trout fingerlings being dumped in the harbour by the hatchery crew and MNR officials because they proceeded to fill up on the helpless fish as they would swim close to the government dock where a few inches of open water was. The gulls gobbled them up by the thousands. Eugene and Prina Gerow were anxious to see if 'their pet gull George would appear again. He came and settled about the rock garden for his food. The Gerows tagged Geroge as they could spot him. He is boss of his domain and drives all other birds away from his fool supply. Blackbirds and crows are here by the hundreds. An odd robin is seen racing over lawns looking for 'ood while English sparrows swing yn clotheslines and flit along win- low ledges.
