Nipigon OPP play big part in by Sandy Harbinson Nipigon OPP officers could scarcely believe their ears early last Wednesday morning, when a request came through for them to help stop a stolen (Greyhound- type) bus. The bus belonging to Happy Time Tours had been stolen from the Grey Goose Buslines terminal around 2.45am., and was chased by - police for almost 300 km. before it smashed into a rock cut, and exploded in flames _ near Marathon. Thunder Bay Police chased the bus for the first 100 km., then the OPP Nipigon Detachment took up the hunt and were still on the tail of the speeding vehicle when officers of the Marathon detach- ment shot the rear tires out just 40 km. west of their town. As officers followed the big bus at a safe distance, others tried to halt it with roadside blocks, but the driver paid no attention ana kept on going at times reaching speeds in excess of 140 km/hr. The police had already t-ken steps in advance to keep oiher traffic off the road, but one vehi- cle that was already on the high- way at the time found himself in the ditch after the bus tried to sideswipe him. As daylight approached, police feared possible disaster if the bus were to mingle with the early Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 10, 1987, page 11 : morning traffic, and that is when the decision to shoot at the vehi- Cle's tires and radiator was taken. Twenty year old Kelly Hardy from Thunder Bay was arrested as he fled the burning bus, and taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Marathon, where he was treated for minor injuries and released into police custody. He was charged with a number of offences including: Escaping law- ful custody, Theft over $1,000, bus episode and Failure to stop for police. The bus, worth almost $150,000, was burnt out and com- pletely destroyed. A Nipigon OPP spokesperson said it was a miracle that no one was killed or seriously injured as a result of the incident, but that the police tactics of playing it cool and not trying to "chase" the speeding bus contributed a lot to the successful conclusion of the Dangerous driving, Hit and run whole affair.
