Terrace Bay- Bell Canada's tax con- tribution locally as a result of telecom- munications operations in 1986 totall- ed $53,400. Last year Bell spent $471,000 in this area to maintain and upgrade telephone service. The 1987 cost is expected to be $78,000. There were 1,006 customers in the Terrace Bay exchange at the end at 1986. In 1986, Bell paid $53,413.26 in taxes to Terrace Bay as follows: real estate, $1,365.24; business, $409.57; and gross receipts, $51,638.45 or $28.51 per phone. Company-wide, Bell's capital ex- penditures this year will likely tutal $1.787 billion, with Ontario's share more than $1 billion. Bits and Bites By Helene Ballard I hope no one got lost in the fog- it sure was bad. It felt like London, England. We wlecomed a new resident at Birchwood, 'Queenie Halliday'- we hope she enjoys her stay with us. Our 'resident gardener' Cliff Barker has been busy in the garden planting some vegetable seeds- sure will be nice to have fresh-picked vegetables for our meals. On Monday, the 25th, our lounge looked like a department store. "Maureen's Comfort Clothing' was here and our residents could look over the dresser, blouses, etc., and several bought some nice new clothes so we are all set for summer. Our thanks to our ever-faithful card players who came in on the 26th for an afternoon of bridge and cribbage. On Friday, the 29th, some of the residents drove into Schreiber to visit their friends at the Chimo Club. Those folks always make us feel so welcome. I suppose you lovely ladies are busy buying a gift for "Father's Day" June 21- let's not forget *'dear ole Dad". On behalf of the residents I want to thank our Ladies Auxiliary for the "Bake Sale' held on the 22nd and to all who came or helped in any way. Not much more to write for this week so I'll sign off with this bit of 'fluff'. Two matronly ladies to travel agent: ""We'd like to get complete- ly away from civilization, near some nice shopping centres." "'Cheerio".
