His co-workers were all pre- sent to wish him a happy and healthy retirement. The crew had a cake ready to serve with coffee. It was decorated representing Hightway 17 crossing this great northern part of Ontario. Tiny toy trucks were painted yellow with the lettering MTC painted on the doors and carry- ing tools and fence posts in the dumper. An enjoyable hour was spent reminiscing of the days gone by causing many a good laugh over the relating of many situations and episodes while engaged in their duties. On arriving home, Dave was greeted by his family and wife Helda, Joyce Lanigan and son Jamie of Nipigon, Hilton of Ter- race Bay, Peter of Sioux Lookout, and son Christopher, Laurie Anne and son Rocco of Thunder Bay, and Della of so 8 BRIDAL ome and go BRIDAL SHOWER in honour of His daughter Agness of Mon- treal was unable to be present. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Legault pro- vided a roast beef dinner for them. The old McKay house was torn down during the week. It was one of the oldest buildings in town. It was built in the early 1800's by the first permanent lighthouse keeper on Battle Island. I was unaware that the building was being demolished (it being at the west end of the village) until Emily Schreoder and friend Lorinda Bain came to the house with some newspaper and magazine pages for me. They were badly chewed up and torn. There is always a wealth of in- formation in old papers and magazines. The piece of newspaper was dated 1949. It had danes advertised form 75 cents to one dollar per person, a gift shop advertisment had English bone china sets at $22 a set- even the police court laid charges on men causing bodliy harm, etc., an agency had homes BsSeceateteed SHOWER See MISS TINA CEBRARIO Det - on SUNDAY MAY 3ilst FROM 8 pm - 10 pm ; at HOLY ANGELS PARISH CENTRE ~~ EVERYONE WELCOME! The magazine pages appeared to be from an old ovie book showing Ginger Rogers, Vinton Hayworth, Nora Flinn, Dick Haymes, Esther Williams and others and of course, advertising all sorts of cosmetics to make beautful and lively clothing worn by the actresses of the time. The village had a surprise visit Thursday from a group of seven ~ white pelicans migrating from the south settled near Nicol Island but the coming and going of boats in and out of the har- bour made them uneasy to settle down and they took off towards the northeast, probably remain- ed at some small lake overnight. Birdwatchers ashore hurriedly grabbed their binoculars for a better view of this large water bird. They are sometimes known as the Common Pelican of the North. There were in and out of the harbour so quickly that it was difficult to take a picture of them. They are white with black primaries- the lengthened feathers of the back of the head and breast. They have a pale yellow bill and feet, a pouch shading from white to yellowish on the under flat bill which serves like a soup dish when the young are feeding. They build their nest by scrap- -- seo tae rae. xy respectively. The unemployment rate in Northern Ontario was 12.1 per cent in February, up from 11.9 per cent, according to statistics prepared for the ministry of northern development and mines. This is 4.7 per cent higher than the Ontario average and 1.6 per cent higher than the Canadian average. The report, prepared by Statistics Canada, showed the unemployment rate in Northwestern Ontario was 9.4 per cent and the rate in Northeastern Ontario 13.2 per cent. Thunder Bay and Sudbury, the largest metropolitan areas, showed 8.9 per cent unemployed and 11.2 per cent unemployed Unemployment was heaviest among those with high school educations at 15.3 per cent. The percentage dropped to 10.3 per cent with those who had some post-secondary education. The statistics did not provide figures for those with degrees and diplomas, but the figure was only 7.8 per cent unemployed among this group in January. CHIEF R.N.
