Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, April 29, 1987, page 7 Lions Club getting started now in our area Mr. Kenneth Spawn, district governor 5M-10 of the Lions Club, visited the News office last week and said that anyone who is interes- ed in becoming a Lion should con- tact one of the local represen- tatives, or executives. Lions are volunteer members of clubs grouped under an Interna- tional organization, where they en- joy fellowship, and dedicate part of their free time to help those in need all over the world, while making their individual communities a bet- ter place to live in. Beginnings * Lionism began in the United States in 1917 when a group of in- dependent clubs responded to an ideal presented to them by a young Chicago insurance agent, Melvin Jones. The ideal was one of service as a group to their fellow men without regard to politics, religion, race, or in any way the personal interests of the members. This was heralded as a departure from the trend current at that time of forming clubs basically with a commercial motive. A conference was called of some 25 independent clubs on June 7, 1917, and from this meeting the organization was born. Although the youngest, The In- enneth Spawn ternational Association of Lions Clubs has grown to be the largest service club organization in the world, represented b" over 36,000 clubs with a membership exceeding 1,358,000 in over 157 countries and geographic areas. Any male person of legal ma- jority, good moral character and good reputation in his community may be granted membership in a duly authorized Lions Club. Membership is by invitation only. From the start, the emphasis has been on service in all forms to less fortunate members of the com- munity. The club's constitution, as recommended by the Association, may be adapted by the local club to suit its own particular re- quirements while keeping within the principles of the Association and its International consitution. Service activities The numerous activities that Lions undertake have been classified in the following manner: Major Service Commitments- Drug Awareness and _ Diabetes Awareness; Other Major Service Activities- Sight Conservation and Work with the Blind, Hearing and Speech Action and Work with the Deaf, Environmental Services, Leo Club Program, Youth Exchange Program, Lioness Club. Program, International Relations; Other Ac- tivities of Lionism- Citizenship Ser- vices, Educational Services, Health Services, Social Services, Recrea- tional Services, Public Services and International Youth Camps.
