Johnson Hewson 824-3155 IVIP's stay busy by KEITH PENNER When most people think of the work done by members of Parliament, they think of Question Period and speeches in the House of Commons itself. While debates and Ques- tion period are important, perhaps the most important work of MPs is done in committee. Legislation, government reports, and important issues facing the nation are referred to House of Com- mons committees for detailed study. There, members of Parliament not only examine legislation or government reports in detail, they also have the opportunity to call and question witnesses in order to gain further insight into the possible effects of government policies, ac- tivities. and proposed legislation. Committees provide Canadians, whether groups, organizations or individuals, with the op- portunity to participate in the most fundamental democratic right of Cana- dians - to have a say in what actions or legislation Parliament adopts. While most committee work is done in Ottawa, some. committees. will ac- tually visit communities across Canada to conduct hearings. By visiting com- munities outside Ottawa, travelling committees ex- tend the opportunity for Canadians to express their views and concerns. For the most part, the work of parliamentary committees does not receive media or public at- tention. This is a shame. Members work long and hard on these committees to ensure that legislation is as good as it can be and adequately reflects the views and concerns of Canadians. (Keith Penner, MP (Liberal) Cochrane- Superior, is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Indian Af- fairs and Northern Development, and the Nor- thern Pipelines Committee. He is also a member of the panel of chairmen charge of Legislative Committees.) HOUSE FOR SALE in Schreiber Good neighbourhood and large back yard.
