Introductions Although I've been here over a month, I still haven't introduced myself. Yes, again, another new face at the News, I'm the advertising manager, Gigi Dequanne. Since I've been here, I've tried to brighten up the ads, I hope you agree that some of them have looked pretty nice. I haven't had advertising training as such but I have a 2-year diploma in Elec- tronic Data Processing (Bilingual program), in Hello: Let's see what goodies we have today. It has been a very nice week at least for this Ole Gal, in spite of the weather. Last Saturday some of the Seniors from _ Bir- chwood had a very nice time at the Legion at their tea it was such fun to meet folks you know and have a chat over a cup of tea. Another event which I for one really enjoyed was the first concert of the 1985-86 series, believe me the young lady sure could play the flute, she is still young and will no doubt become one of Canada's great flautists - also the young pianist shows a great deal of talent. I sure would like to be able to hear them 10 years from now. At this time I would like, on behalf of Birchwood to thank Mr. Ray Belliveau who was kind enough to provide transportation for us both to the tea and the concert. which I have had the op- portunity to learn a fair bit of marketing (it resembles advertising). I enjoy arts extensively. Taking time out to work on an oil painting now and then, building another stained glass project or simply going out and tak- ing almost too many pic- tures of our beautiful lake and all of the surrounding area. It's been a favorite past time of mine ever since | moved here 4 years ago. Please feel free to con- tact me about any questions you might have on what I might be able to do for you in your advertising needs. Or, if your organization could use some good ex- posure, we need a regular supply of sponsors for our promotional ads that run once in a while too. I'm at the News office at 825-3747. Bits and Bites by Helene Ballard We are always grateful to all you folks for the many things you do on our behalf. Had a nice group of ladies come in to play cards with the residents, from the sounds of laughter I think everyone had a good time, thank you ladies for com- ing - please come again, we look forward to seeing many of you every Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30. It has been some time since I have had a "Bite", I guess we have a happy town, at least I have not heard of any complaints - I hope this is not the calm before the storm and we get a real *'Hot Bite". At any rate if you have one please let me know. Until next week remember - "'Don't let your tongue back you into a corner your feet can't walk you out of."' So long. Perths DRY na LEANING SERVICES by MARY HUBELIT Met my fan downtown the other day and she ask- ed why I had had no col- umn in the paper for such a long time. I explained the extra duties undertaken while N. was convalescing this summer, and express- ed the hope that there would .be more time this winter. When I came home I checked the file and it's true - I've reported to you in only twelve issues dur- ing 1985! Didn't realize that I'd been that busy, but it was worth it. The town, meanwhile, was buzzing as usual - graduations, vacations, weddings, Dominion Day festivities, Fall Fairs and many other fun activities. The highlight for me was receiving (from my brother's possessions) a parcel from my widowed sister-in-law. My Mother's wedding dress, worn on January 3rd, 1913, is now in her daughter's hands, complete with satin pumps, orange-blossom headdress, lace mitts, and a yellowed, brittle issue of The Neepawa Press announcing the marriage. The dress is of ivory satin, with draped bodice and over-skirt ac- cented with dainty medallions of silver and pearl beads. There are dozens of hooks-and-eyes fastening parts of the ensemble together because zippers had not been in- vented in 1913. The lace mitts and coy removable 'bertha' collar are bordered with a fine net ruching. What material? I don't know - nylon had not been invented in 1913 either. Why do I tell you all this? Well, I have been looking with new eyes at the folks I meet downtown. I find a goodly percentage of shining, silvery crowns on the passersby and I think: well, gee, everybody had a mother (I had mine with me till 1940) and maybe the story of a precious gift from the past might brighten the scene for people of any age. So, think about your mother for a minute - can you im- agine what she looked like on that day? My second reaction was: how petite she was! Was I ever that dainty? Sheesh! Accompanying this treasured relic was a scrap- book of post-cards Mother collected while a teenager. There are 323 of them, dated from 1902 to 1912.- from Holland, Ireland, United States, Germany, Canada and England. They provide a_ fascinating glimpse into the lifestyles of a small town at the beginning of the 20th century. If you like I'll tell you more about them later - but you'll have to ask our Editor or myself - we can't guess. I've been telling you odd bits of odd news since 1979 so trust me. You'll find it interesting.
