This decision was made because of sharply deteriorating zinc prices combin- ed with higher smelter charges which result in substantially reduced revenue for the mine. These adverse conditions are caused in part by the anticipated reac- tivation of a major Yukon zinc producer. In September, the Company announced its decision to bring the Winston Lake property into production at a cost of $52.5 million on the.assumption that cur- rent zinc surpluses would be absorbed by 1987. Work already commissioned will be completed. Further development is postponed until an improvement takes place in the supply-demand balance of zinc. 'proximately 65 women by MARILYN MoQUIN On October 25, 26, and 27th Terrace Bay hosted the North Shore Women's Conference resulting from Project Mayday which was established May, 1982. The Conference was held at St. Martin's Church. There were ap- registered. The women came from the surrounding areas of Schreiber, Ear Falls, Manitouwadge, ~Marathon, Thunder Bay and Rossport. They came to support and share information regarding the women in the North Shore Communities meeting their needs to bet- ter the quality of life for all residents. The organization's main objectives are to increase the capacity of women to participate fully in improv- ing the status of their lives by: involving women in defining the needs of their community as they relate to women and finding ways of meeting these needs; developing a supoort net- work for women living in isolated communities; educating the public with respect to women's issues and lobbying for the ser- vices and policy changes necessary to improve women's lives. On Friday there. was registration. The Welcome Remarks were by, Mary Burnett, Chairperson Pro- ject Mayday; Joy Fedoruk, N. Ont. Officer, Women's Directorate. Diana Ellis, Consultant of the B.C. Women's Research Centre was the Keynote Speaker. Also in attendance were Keith Penner, M.P. and Cancer Society Donation McDougall of the Canadian Cancer Society. Pictured is Rolly Sinotte presenting a cheque on behalf of the Jackfish Reunion Committee in the sum of $521.00 to Marianne Gilles Pouliot, MPP. A wine and cheese reception followed. On Saturday, Rev. Bill Major, Director, Pastoral Institute of Sudbury spoke on Men On Top - The Bedroom and the Economy. This was followed by a panel presen- tation of Women's Lives in Single Industry Towns by the Researchers; Karen Kusins, Judy van den Ende, Pam McKeever and Carol Quesnelle. There were a variety of workshops such as: Fami- ly Law, Assertiveness Training, Coping with Unemployment, Lobbying, Town Planning, Self Esteem, Women and Economic Development and many others, there was a film festival, dinner and later entertainment by Heather Bishop and Tracey Riley. On Sunday there were more workshops, lunch and then a Plenary Session and closing. The workshops were thoroughly enjoyed, and the overall response was positive. The North Shore Women's Conference was sponsored by Project May- day with financial support provided by: The Ontario Women's Directorate and The Secretary of State.
