Legion donates mini-bus By David Carswell On September 27 the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 223 of Terrace Bay donated a brand new, customized mini-van to the residents of Birchwood Terrace. The mini-van seats 10 persons and has room. for an additional 2 wheelchairs. The wheelchairs can be loaded and unloaded by way of a hydraulic lift which can be operated automatically or by means of hand crank, in case of an emergency. The van even has a cassette deck so that the passengers can listen to their favourite music while being transported around in comfort. At a luncheon at Bir- chwood Legion: Branch President Stan Greenwood presented Blanche Speck, President of the Birchwood residents' Council with the ownership and keys to the new van. Also-present-at the ceremony and luncheon were Tom Gash, ad- ministrator for Birchwood, Gilles Poulliot, MPP for our riding, Adie Beaulieu, President of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, and Mary Ann Sigurdson, ad- ministration and nursing supervisor for Birchwood: In her opening remarks, Sigurdson commented that, 'the legion has been very generous and we at Bir- chwood are very happy to have them bestow their generosity upon us."' The idea of providing a mini-bus. for the residents of Birchwood began back in 1984. Joan Leblanc, ac- tivity co-ordinator for Bir- chwood and the Ladies Auxilliary got the ball roll- ing. The Royal Canadian Legion stepped in, in order to make "a" donation to the project but after some research into the cost of the project decided to fund the project. The Ladies Aux- illiary of the Legion ~<donated-an additional sum of money in order to pay for certain items such-as the custom paint job and the cassette deck. According to Stan Greenwood, the Legion or any one individual is not responsible for the mini- bus but that all of the com- munity residents who sup- ported the project through the purchase of Nevada tickets were really the ones who should be thanked. During the ceremony Mr. Greenwood presented Pat Spandoni with a cheque to cover the cost of the van, "'it was Spandoni's who took all of our ideas about what the residents needed and transformed them into reality." Once again a communi- ty organization and the people of the community have proved that working together benefits all of us in the end. On behalf of the community and the residents of Birchwood a very much deserved thank you to the members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 223, Terrace Bay and the Ladies Auxilliary.
