Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, September 11, 1985, page 11 Health problems can interfere with learning Every year thousands of health problems which are prevalent in students of grade and high-school level are first recognized by their teachers. Likewise, coaches and physical education instructors watch for and often detect health irregularities which might interfere with a child's physical performance and learning ability. The "school guardian" is responsible in many cases for the detection of potential health problems and the funneling of children to proper health authorities. Many of the children that visit medical doctors', dentists', eye doctors', and doctors' of chiropractic offices have been referred by concern- ed school teachers and coaches. Thus many health problems are pinpointed, hopefully before they become serious. Through a combination of experiences and extreme awareness to child's reac- tion to work and play situa- tions, teachers are. very helpful. Yet, the school authorities' dedication gives rise to another pro- blem - a pervading attitude among parents that they can rely totally on the school. Because of the guardianship portrayed by the school official, many parents figure that if the child has a health problem, the school teacher or coach will notice it. What most people don't know is that most health problems are far too com- plex for the teacher to note. Therefore many children have health problems that retard their ability to learn or engage in. sports effec- tively, consequently affec- ting their future due to diminished abilities. Many of those problems go un- noticed until they become serious. f Science Centre Sideshow Called shocking by some, amazing by others, and simply "neat" by thousands, one of the On- tario Science Center's travelling Science Sideshows is coming to Terrace Bay's Fall Fair. The show begins on Sun- day. September 15, 1985 and runs until Tuesday September 17, 1985. Hours are from: 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday; 12 noon to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Movies, puzzles, illu- sions and George, the life- size torso, set the scene for visitors. Highlights of the 15 exhibits and activities include: * Pedaling a bicycle to make electricity * Exploring the super cold using liquid nitrogen... about 200 degrees below zero Centigrade * The hologram... a 3-dimensional picture made with laser light * Papermaking workshops Constantly changing, Science Sideshows visit communities throughout Ontario every year. Pick over the rubber brain, have your hair stand on end and get attracted to a magnet when the Science Sideshow comes to town. The Sciece Sideshow... phenomenal fun for everyone. Admission is free. And if the child engages in sports, this would be all the more important. Hats off to those teachers and coaches that Concerned parents should take this into con- sideration before they ad- monish their children for lack of performance in school, lack of coordina- are so dedicated, and con- tinue to keep their eyes peeled for potential health problems. To be safe, make certain your children, and your family, practice preventive health care with regularly scheduled chiropractic examinations. tion, and poor work and play habits. Some health problems can be obvious - but some are much more remote to the non-expert. For example, consider the structural balance of your child's body. The Your own PRIVATE Storage Area school teacher would no doubt note your child's posture, but that does not always indicate the struc- tural integrity of the body. It would be best to see a doctor of chiropractic for a comprehensive chiroprac- tic examination, including examinations of the spine, pelvis, neck and limbs. This is especially important during the growing years.
