By Duane Peters Holy Gospel Lutheran Fellowship And Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "'How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God." And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle . than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God." And they were exceeding- ly astonished and said to Him, "Then who can be saved?" "With men it is impossible but not with God; for all things are possible with God." (Mark 10:23-27) 'How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God." This passage is a familiar one to most Chris- tians, but familiarity does not preclude further discus- sion. In fact our familiari- ty with scripture sometimes causes us to overlook points that our Lord would have us remember. In the sentence I have quoted above, The Greek word used for-riches is 'chremata'. This word. often means 'posessions, property, or wealth' or in it's simple sense 'things'. I have no quarrel with the accuracy of the translation, but I think that when we consider the age in which we live, it might also be ap- propriate to translate 'chremata' as 'things', rather than riches, for we are, as no other generation has ever been, a generation obsessed with 'things.' After all what household is complete without a refrigerator, deep-freeze, washer, dryer, dishwasher, radio, colour television, stereo, microwave, snowmobile, snow blower, boat, car, truck, chain-saw, sewing machine, lawn mower, kitchen center and vacuum cleaner. In 1985, we must now add VCR and home computer to our list. Our forebearers had none of these things yet we would not consider living without them. When you look at the passage in these terms it is obvious that there are very few of us who do_ not have 'chremata.' The danger of material possessions is that we become attached to them and they tend to draw us away from God. Little by little our desire to own more things increases un- til we reach a point where our whole existence could be defined as a continuous state of working for our next possession. We lay up treasures for ourselves on earth and neglect the heavenly treasure. What is more, this danger need not be limited to material possessions. It applies to anything which tends to draw us away from God., Be that a hockey game or a social event, no matter what it is, if it takes precedence over our rela- tionship with our Saviour, if we put this 'thing' before God, then we are in danger because, as Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Mathew 6:21) If it is more important for us to spend time with our snowmobiles or social Direct Mr. J.W. May and Dan PHOTO PRINTS clubs than it is to spend time with God, then that is our treasure and the treasures of heaven are not for us. How can we avoid these dangers? "Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness." (Matthew 6:33) "But it is hard to enter the Kingdom of God," you reply. "With men it is impossible, but not with God. All things are possible with God."' Do not reply on yourself. Do not trust in your own works. Do not try to find meaning in your life in your possessions. Look to God and trust in Him. In God alone you will find true happiness. In this passage Jesus has shown us the whole doc- trine of salvation in a nut- shell. If our salvation depended on our own ef- forts it would be impossi- ble, because we can never be good enough to attain it. No man is perfect, but salvation is the gift of God and all things are possible for Him. If we trust in our own works or in our own possessions we will never be saved, but if we trust in God's mercy, if we believe that Jesus Christ is our Saviour, then we shall be saved. "'For by grace are we saved through faith; and this is not our own doing, it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8) This is the foundation of the Christian, Faith. flights Bay utilizing its Dash-8 aircraft. There is no evening con- nection now, he stated, and NorOntair's new week-day flights will fill that void.
