Terrace Bo'... et Schreiber =: News pot Wednesday, March 13, 1985 Vol. 20, No: 11 Serving Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport oo W Ontario Winter Games Local people participate The Ontario Winter Games will be held March 14th to 17th in St. Catherines. There will be 7 regions taking part in the Games, and the competi- tion will be stiff and ex- citing. If you plan on go- ing down, be sure to check in on the badminton games, as Terrace Bay will be well represented, Donna Shynkaryk of Terrace Bay is one of the contenders, and.she shows great poten- tial to win. Donna is studying at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, where the Northwestern Ontario Bad- minton team holds most of their practices. Donna won the North Shore champion- 'ships last year, and placed among the winners in the two Junior Badminton. _ Tournaments earlier this year, she also excelled in the qualifying tournament, therefore earning a place on the N.W. Ontario team. Also travelling with Donna is Jim Corrigan from Terrace Bay. Jim is highly respected on the Ontario badminton circuit, being named player of the month (Nov./Dec. °84) and as Regional Director for the Ontario Badminton Association. He has much tournament experience, which will be of great help to the Northwestern team travelling to St. Catherines. Jim has spent a lot of time with Donna, improv- ing her game and plans to keep a very close eye on her and her opponents at this upcoming competition. Jim will be spending his time helping all members of the team with last minute strategy and tactics to best defeat their, opponent. With Donna's skill, and Jim's guidance it should make for , a winning combination. They will be returning just in time to take part in the District Championships Road hockey at the Schreiber Winter Carnival. to be held in Thunder Bay, March 23 and 24, after which Jim will return to Terrace Bay, and will be concentrating on sparking people's interest in bad- minton in this area. Terrace Bay will be 'hosting the North Shore Championships at the end of April, which should pro- ve very exciting. Jim is looking for sponsors to donate trophies, as he is organizing an annual Ter- race Bay Invitational Tour- nament. He has worked hard and travelled far to reach his success and now has close contacts in the Last week we reported of the fire at the former gas station at Jackfish Lake. Not only was it a former gas station, and restaurant in the summer but the home of Mr. and Mrs. Desmond Miller. Mr. Miller believes he lost close to $200.00, and the saddest part 2 of their 3 cats. It may have been a bless- ing that Mrs. Miller was out of town at the time, as Mr. Miller escaped with not too much time to lose. The fire somehow started in.the pop machine at the front of the building. Mr. and Mrs. Miller seem to be getting along o.k. now, luckily they still have their trailer which they have managed to make quite comfortable. They in- tend to get building right away So as to be opened as usual for their summer business. badminton association which will greatly benefit the standard of play in this area. Jim plans on inviting many of these experienced players to Terrace Bay to help him with clinics and workshops. Jim and fellow badmin- ton players get together every Monday at 7:00 p.m. and Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the Terrace Bay High School to play, and he in- vites all interested persons to come out and join them (I think he may be looking for another Donna Shynkaryk). Friendship | meeting The Canada-Taiwan Friendship Association will be making a slide presen- tation on Taiwan in the Terrace Bay High School on Thursday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. This will also be an opportunity for students and parents interested in the Association's summer student exchange program with Taiwan to ask ques- tions and pick up applica- tion forms. What a save!! The Terrace Bay Police Force will be holding a ses- sion on Drinking and Driv- ing this March 19th and 21st. The force believes in educating the community in this most serious offence. Constable Russ Phillips of the Terrace Bay Detach- ~ment is very interested 'in ar <5 ee this project and has taken it upon himself to present this information to the public. he will be showing 2 films, "So You Think You Can Drink and Drive', and "Make Sure It Isn°t You", as well as Roadside Alert and Breathalyzer test demonstrations. Drinking and driving is most certainly a horrifying experience, especially those who think they are capable of controlling themselves no matter what the case. Constable Phillips intends to teach us all our limits. In this part of the coun- try, where buses are prac- tically nil and taxis scarce, most of us do not think twice about getting behind the wheel.
