The follow- ing is a list of first sightings in each month over the past ten years - January is easy - we feed 'em all in our backyard! Last week while checking a function, I pass- ed a woman who was hav- ing one of those days when the kids are such darlings ... aS I went by her com- ment was, "If you don't smarten up, I'll have that policeman put you in jail."' The child looked at me with a horrified look and I reminded the mother than police do not put-kids in jail. It would be nice when we are at our wit's end with what to do with Johnny, but, is there not a better way to handle that situa- tion? You could always say, "Wait till your father gets home". If our children are taught to be afraid of police officers, whom do you expect them to turn to when they become lost or in trouble. You may not like the police but wouldn't you sooner have a policeman bring your son or daughter home by the hand or would you rather hear him say, "I'm sorry, Bay FEBRUARY Herring Gull Hoary Redpoll Common Crow Snow Bunting MARCH Spruce Grouse Lapland Longspur House Sparrow White-breasted Nuthatch Robin (!) I have forgotten the ex- act date of this disaster, but it must have been about 70 years ago, as I was only a child. I can remember a great about it though, as my father's train was the last one over the fateful bridge. He was a railroader, out of Webbwood. This day he was on the east bound freight from Webbwood to Sudbury. There were four passenger trains travelling the Soo line at that time. Two were Tornto trains, numbers 17 and 18. Two were Montreal bound, numbers 27 and 28. The Montreal train ran through to Minneapolis, Min- nesota, where an American crew took over. I think it was the Toronto train that was involved in_ this tragedy, as Nairm is only a few miles east of Webb- wood, and the freight would have left Webbwood around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. The Toronto passenger went morning and evening, while the Montreal went afternoon. There was a massive loss of life, when this freight and the passenger collided. My father told us about a woman whose coach was slowly submerg- ing into the water. She was holding her baby out the window, screaming for help to save the child. No one could get to her, as other cars began to slide down the bank. It was very very sad. A couple from Webb- wood were returning from their honeymoon. They were found in their com- partment, she holding her rosary and prayer book. She was Miss Foran, they were related to the Currier family at home. One Ring-billed Gull was seen on that trip also. On Oct. 11/79 I've recorded identifying an In- digo Bunting and on Oct. 16/84 a Crested Myna. Really, Mary, you'd better watch that Autumn Mist!
