Terrace Bay Community Credit Union 36th ANNUAL MEETING Sunday, Dec. 9th, 1984 at 7:00 p.m. in the New Office, Simcoe Plaza coffee and doughnuts will be served Not for Profit but for Service - We are for You Please attend members present (18), especially in view of all the other meetings also scheduled for that night. Many also phoned us to offer help.even though they could not actually" attend the meeting. The slate of Officers and Directors are as follows: Peter Monks, re-elected as President; Hyacinthe Landry, re- elected as 1st Vice Pres- ident; Walter Bigelow, re-elected as 2nd Vice President; Kim Lavigne, Secretary; Marjorie Gra- ham, Treasurer. Cora Ropchan, Teresa Landry and Ted Jakubowski were re-elected to serve another term as Direc- tors. Ed McAdam, Shir- ley Rippengal, Yvonne Earle, Carolyn McLeod and Al Chishelm were also elected to serve a term as Directors. To- gether with our five current Directors (who stand down next year) Doris Walton, Daphne Monks, Roger Four- nier, Duncan MacKay and Iris Lindberg, this gives us a total of five officers and_ thirteen Directors to run our society, and will great- ly improve the way we can give service to the community. We look forward to a good year in 1985. Chilly Sod Turning Ceremony | A hardy group of health workers, _poli- ticians and press braved freezing winds last week to witness official sod- turning for the new _Thunder Bay District Health Unit building. Ontario's Chiéf Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Korn, represent- ing the Premier and Minister of Health, and District Board of Health Chairman Don Stewart push a_ goldpainted spade through frozen turf to signal the start of construction at the Bal- moral Street site. Cost-sharing agree- ments for the $2.6 mil- lion, two-storey struc- ture call for 2/3 fund- ing by the province, and the balance from all municipalities within the Thunder Bay District. M.P.P. Mickey Hen- nessy and a number of area reeves and mayors were on hand for the field ceremony and wine and cheese gathering which followed at the Valhalla Inn. In his brief address to the shivering audience, Dr. Korn noted that this - construction start coin- cides with the arrival at the Health Unit of new health: promotion staff. The province is commit- ted, he said, to more emphasis on promotion and prevention in our health care system. Architects and con- sulting engineers for the 25,000 sq. foot building are Graham, Bacon and Welter. Local contractor Gateway Building and Supply Ltd. has now begun full-scale exca- vation at the intercity site and plans to have the building ready for occupancy in November, 1985. The new building will be an exciting design centered around a two- storey high, sky-lit atrium. Heating will be from both electricity and passive solar. Plans for air conditioning had to be _ indefinitely _post- poned in a last-minute cost-trimming measure. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has a staff of almost eighty, and provides public health nursing, school dental visits, immuni- zation, speech and lan- guage pathology, nu- trition education, health inspection, sexually transmitted disease clinics and other ser- vices to residents of the City of Thunder Bay and communities reaching from Manitouwadge to Upsala and stretching north to Hudson Bay. The new building will slider the Unit to bring all'of its Thunder Bay offices, clinics and ed- ucational areas under one roof. Schreiber PC's Meet | The Schreiber Pro- gressive. Conservative Association met on Thurs- day November 29 at the Chimo Club. The main topic of concern was the upcoming Leadership Con- vention. Those present seem to be leaning toward Larry Grossman as the one to succeed Premier Davis. Raymond ven der Buhs, Managing Director USC Canada Voyageur Tales Miss Lake Superior Crowned!! by JANET CHAPPEL Chrissy McLellen of Schreiber was named Miss Lake Superior for our school on Friday November 23rd. Her title was changed from Harvest Queen to Miss Lake Superior because her duties are to be extended throughout the entire school year. Her duties include hosting school activities, rep- resenting the school body, and welcoming new students to the school. Her gifts includ- ed three roses, a box of chocolates, ear muffs and mittens. The first runner-up was Raija Liukkonen who received one rose and a necklace. The second runner-up was Kim Bryson who received a rose and a pair of earrings. Jamie _ Figiliomeni, Mike Barry and Lisa Ready presented a check of $50.00 towards Steve Fonyo's marathon. The check was donated on behalf of the students of Lake Superior High School. The remaining pay- ment for the school jack- ets is now due. Please contact Brent Bertin or Tim Wilson as soon as possible if you have not paid all ready. Mr. Robert Wallwin of Terrace Bay passed away in a Thunder Bay Hospital on Wed. 1984. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 223 and retired from Kimberly Clark in 1982. . Survived by his wife, Estelle, son Bob and wife Cathy-Jo, daughter Margaret Jean Wilron. Grandchildren, Cheryl and Brianne. Also sur- vived by his brothers Dan and Bill and nieces and nephews.
