\ Schreiber Scribbles | by WINNIE CAMPBELL Our deepest sympathy to the Caccamos on the pass- ing of Mrs. Clara Caccamo in Thunder Bay, a. past resident of Schreiber. Women's The Women's Institute met for their November meeting in the Town Hall November 13th with 8 members present and Mrs. Dora Weaver presiding. Mrs. Eirene Harness read the minutes of the last meeting. The ode to Mary Saint Collect was recited. The thought for the day by Mavis Slater is as follows '*In speaking well of others you speak well of ~ yourself."* The Motto by Winnie was as follows 'If you ever have a little thought, an urge to do a friendly act, don't quit. Just go ahead. A kindness done to so- meone sad will make your own heart twice as glad." Current events were many as follows: Miracle baby born in McMaster Hospital; new heart transplant; Larry Grossman seeks the leader- ship of the Ontario P.C.'s; American pilot Gary Pit- cher found near Waiva and Get well to Austin Cosgrove, J. Bryson, Luella McColeman and Wes Miller. Institute 2) Toronto men whose plane crashed in 1977 found. Mrs. Eirene Harness gave a very interesting talk on citizenship and world affairs. Winnie Campbell gave her card report and read thank you notes from Camilla Todesco and Net- tie Thrower. Many birth- day cards and get well cards were sent to the members. Stamps and cards were given to the card secretary. Plans were made for next month's Christmas Turkey supper at the Voyageur Dec. 11th and afterwards at the Coll- ingwood Home for a gift exchange, cookie exchange and games. Marion Gates laid the wreath on behalf ot the Women's Institute at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day. ; The meeting closed with the Queen, and lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sully were here for the funeral of Mr. Scott. Mrs. Eleanor O'Connor was surprised by her fami- ly and friends and grand- sons from Thunder Bay for her 93rd birthday. She received many cards and gifts as well as a cake made by Emestine Hucula, and a nice bouquet of flowers from Schreiber Town Council. Rev. and Mrs. Johnson have returned from Saskat- chewan after attending the * birth of their new grand- daughter. Also our sym- pathy to the Reverend Johnsons in the death of their 3 month old grandson. Chimo Home Bingo was won by Lil Thibeault and Mrs: Kells. A new one will be starting in December. Letters to the editor Clarification Dear Editor, With reference to your article on the sec- ondary settlement with the Lake Superior Board of Education, let me congratulate you on the accuracy of your fe- porting. It has been mentioned to me by some members of the public, however, that the details of the salary settlement (as printed) were confusing. Let me attempt to clarify them. The raises received by the teachers at all levels of experience are as follows: September to December 1984 - zero r cent, January to August 1985 - three per cent, September to De- cember 1985 - two per cent, January to August 1986 - three per cent. Irrelevant to these negotiations, the Board of Education has a salary cost increase of approximately two per cent because of changes in levels of experience for about one half the total teaching staff. (30 of 65). Hopefully, this summary is a more un- derstandable one. Sincerely, ry HELENE BALLARD Hello everyone! This has been a busy week here at Birchwood since my last effort at writing. I am still work- ing on that Pulitzer prize, but don't hold your breath. On Sunday Novem- ber 11th we had a small but very dignified Mem- orial ceremony to honour our war dead. Pam Jones was in charge of this event and as usual did very well. One of our elderly Res- idents Emery Dusome, a vet himself placed a wreath for Birchwood Terrace. It was most impressive to see this gentleman, who must now use a walker, after placing the wreath, step back and smartly salute his fallen comrades. I know this person was not without a tear in her Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 21, 1984, page 5 Bits and Bites eyes. On Thursday: the 15th we had the pleasure of welcoming Steve Fon- yo the young runner who is taking up the torch for Terry Fox, in the fight against cancer. Let us all hope and pray.that some day with all of us help- ing, a cure will be found. Thursday was also the day for our monthly Residents Birthday Par- ty. This month "The Ladies of the Moose' provided an enjoyable afternoon. Our birthday residents were Mfrs. Florence Jean, Mr. Felix LeGault, Mr. Simon Du- guay and Mrs. Lea Cor- mier. My Bite this week concerns small children who come to Birchwood Beauty Shop with their mothers. We have no- thing against this but please tell the children not to run in the halls. There is always the danger of them running into one of the residents and knocking them down. We are not so steady on our legs any- more and a bad fall could result in a broken hip or leg, so I ask you ladies to please advise your children not to run [= in the halls. Thank you. And until next week remember; yo It's easy to be happy But the girl worthwhile and gay Is the girl who can smile When one has beauty 'Right after she lost her and youth front tooth.
