It was co- published by the two Northern Universities, Lakehead University of Thunder Bay and Laur- entian University of Sudbury. Many people contributed rare photo- graphs, drawings and other unique historical documents which showed that the north- land has a rich and colourful heritage. Each of the Ministry's have been loaned or donated a total of more than 3,000 photographs. (Some have not been used). The Book has 224 pages of interesting facts and photos of the north. I, as a new comer to the area, was very in- terested to read and see the rich and wonderful history you natives of the north have from the first to the last chap- ter. Some of the rare photos that you will see are of, trappers and In- dians in the area, young Sturgeon Falls trappers in the 1920s specialized "in muskrat, racoon, fox, and skunk. By this time beaver had almost dis- appeared from Northern Ontario. Beaver trap- ping was forbidden until. 1932, when a govern- ment program to re- stock beaver was suc- cessful enough to allow trappers to take ten beaver each. The New Liskeard athletic team, the Alerts, was organized in 1932. One team mem- ber, Mary Vanderfleet (Gaydon), competed in the 100-yard races and the relay at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The Alerts com- peted in the British Em- pire Games and the Canada Games in- Hali- fax. There are so many things to see it is hard to know where to start, to tell you about this great book. | Complimentary copies of the book will be given to all high schools, public libra- ries and museums in the region.
