Terrace Bay and Schreiber' Town Coun- cils were made aware of a new innovation which CN and CP Rail compa- nies intend to use on trains, provided they re- ceive permission from the Federal Govern- ment. The new device will replace the caboose and the United Trans- portation Union beliey- es that this would be exceedingly dangerous. The town councils were asked to support a reso- lution asking that pub- lic hearings be held be- fore the law is changed Sam DePaola poses with his Molson Trophy. which now requires ca- booses with personnel inside. A video tape was pre- sented explaining why the Union feels that the End of Train Unit or ETU is dangerous and giving reasons for keep- ing the caboose. Mr. Russ Saarinen and Mr. Darcy Wilson, repre- sentatives of the union local stated that it was not a matter of jobs being lost, only safety that they are concerned with as the conductor and brakeman in the ca- boose will be moved: to the engine. The ETU is a small box attached to the rear coupling of the last car, which informs the en- gineéer of the air brake pipe pressure. What it cannot do, is provide surveillance of the rear portion of a one to two mile long train. Pre- Sent personnel in the caboose can spot loose or tilted loads, fires and unfastened chains, stop a passing train which might be endangered or uncouple cars standing at a level crossing. Local Body Builders Place Well Local body builder Sam DePaola recently placed third in a Body Building Contest held in Thunder Bay, sponsor- ed by Molsons and the Canada Games Fitness Centre. In the meantime he will be training as usual at the Wednesday September 19, 1984 Rec Centre in Terrace Bay. Cathy Osmar from Terrace Bay, now living in Thunder Bay also did . Well in the competition, placing 1st in the wom- en's lightweight divi- sion. Eleanor DePaola also competed and plac- ed near the top in her category. Sam encourages any- one interested in body. building to call himself or George Daniel and join the Terrace Bay Barbell and _ Fitness Club. Vol. 19, No. 37 | Terrace Bay Union Advocates Retention of Cabooses portation Union believ- es that removing the human safeguards from the rear of the train will result in more such acci- dents like the Mississa- uga derailment where thousands of people had to be evacuated. Trains are carrying very dangerous commo- dities through Schreiber dities through Schrei- ber, Terrace Bay and Rossport every day and the Union local is seek- ing support in blocking the testing of the E.T.U. _ to protect these commu- nities. Recreation Director (left) "presents Warner Zigler with his Milers Club Walk 100 Miles in my Shoes There is a new pro- gram at the Terrace Bay Recreation Center for all of you who are inclined to take part. It is called The Milers Club and is going quite well so far. Warner Zig- ler, who is a resident of Birchwood Terrace has just received his certi- ficate for completing his first 100 miles. The whole idea be- hind the Milers Club is to add up as many miles you can, by walking, running, skipping or by any means possible. At the end of the week (Friday) you go to the rec center and report your hours to one of the staff. This is done by the honour system and so far this has worked out well. Once you have added up 100 miles you receive a certificate like Warner is holding in the accompanying photo. If you go on to 750 miles, you will get a plaque and at last when you reach 2000 miles you get a larger plaque and a big round of applause from us all for a job well done. For more informa- tion on this and other programs drop by or call the rec center at 825- 3542. Winners . . . page 5 Inside This Week / Fall Fair . . . page 6 Bits and Bites . . . page 9
