See you there! Northen Aff ain Home Repairs by JANE GREER Have you ever heard of mortar mice? These pesky little creatures re- surface surprisingly soon after smooth-talk- ing sales agents dust off their contracts, paste on a smile and go knocking door-to-door selling home repairs. These salespeople point to crumbling brick and droopy eaves- troughing, (which they heiped along the way by poking and prodding with sharp __instru- ments throughout their sales pitch), shake their heads and say mortar mice have obviously been busy. Of course, there are no .such creatures as mortar mice. This is just a fabrication used ~ to scare people into sign- ing expensive and often unnecessary contracts. Another common home repair or reno- vation gambit is the "free roof or chimney inspection." Here you find, much to your sur- prise that extensive work is needed immedi- ately. The co-operative salesman offers to do the work, and of course, just happens to have a contract ready for sign- ae Another popular tech- nique is to offer a "good deal just because we happen to be in the neighbourhood with our equipment and mater- ials.'"' Don't fall for it. and called. THANK YOU Tarkka - | wish to thank the nurses and staff of P.A.G.H. 4 west, Dr. Morris, Dr. Porter, R.N. Trisha Mayer and the Bourassa family. Special thanks to all who sent cards, flowers and to many friends and relatives who came to visit A special thanks also to the Doug Raison family, the Gorman Family, those who helped-Mom with Curtis and Wayne for all he did for me. Sincerely Patty Tarkka. Hospital. Birth Announcement Alan-and Carole Lavigne are pleased to announce the arrival of their daughter ASHLEY KARYN ON August 16th, 1984. Many thanks to Dr. Lau and the nur- sing staff of the McCausland please' First ask the salesman for references and check them out. To avoid problems, get at least three esti- mates outlining the kind of work to be done, who will do it, how much it will cost, the kind of warranty or guarantee and the starting and completion dates. Be- fore signing, get some- one you trust such as a lawyer or a relative to _ check the contract over carefully to ensure you are fully protected. You should also avoid progression clauses that require you to pay in installments while work is in progress, whether you are satisfied with the work or not. ou shouldn't pay more than 10 per cent down payment before work begins, to ensure you have some leverage if you are dissatisfied with the work. As well, the Mechan- ics Lien Act allows you to hold back 15. per cent of each progress pay- ment until 37 days after © the work is completed. This protects you from liability if the contractor or sub-contractor fails to pay the supplier for materials.- Make sure that you deal with'a reputable company and ensure the seller or contractor is registered with the min- istry, as they are re- quired to be under the Consumer Protection Act. To check a sales- person's or contractor's registration, contact the nearest Consumer Ser- vices Bureau.
