Pro- Hemlo tailing area Noranda Mines Limit- ed has been given ap- proval to construct a tailings and wastewater treatment system at its Hemlo gold mine near Marathon, Ontario. En- vironment Minister Andy Brandt announ- ced today. The company will construct a contain- ment area for tailings disposal and a waste- water treatment sys- tem to Ministry stan- dards. Tailings are a sand-like material which are discarded from the mill process after the gold has been removed from the ore. From the tailings area liquid will be returned to the wastewater treatment system at the mine site prior to discharge to Lim Lake and the White River system. "My ob- jective is to ensure that development of the- Hemlo mine will have minimal impact upon the natural environ- ment," Mr. Brandt said. "There are ele- ven conditions which the company must meet to our satisfaction." Noranda is also requir- ed to monitor its oper- ations, and to provide contingency and oper- ational reports. The White River water- shed was chosen to re- ceive Noranda's treat- ed effluent because it is twice the size of the Black River 'watershed and because the Black River is used as a pot- able water supply by the Pic Heron Bay Indian Reserve. Treated efflu- ent will have no impact on the White River or Lake Superior, the Min- istry has determined. There are three major companies currently de- veloping gold mines in the Hemlo area - Noran- da Mines, Teck Corpora- tion and Lac Minerals - which have requested watertaking privileges from Cedar Creek. En- vironment Ontario has directed the companies to undertake a water management. study to ensure their proposals will not adversely affect the public use of the Plata & Morrill Chartered Accountants Bookkeeping, accounting, auditing, con- sulting and taxation services. § Squier Thunder Bay, Ont. In addition, Environment Ontario has required the three companies to conduct public information ses- sions and meetings to ensure that concerns of the public are identified and adequately address- ed. Similar sessions will be held by the other firms. gram suggestions are welcome and we are presently in the process of putting together our Fall/Winter Program Brochure and we would appreciate hearing from you, what courses would you like to see offered!
