Penner visits Schreiber and Rossport Keith Penner M.P. was recently in the Schreiber and Rossport area calling on con- stituents. In his rounds he was accompanied by Liberal supporter Har- old McParland, a former Reeve of Schreiber. Penner was uncontes- ted for the Liberal nom- ination at a party meet- ing in Kapuskasing on Friday July 27. The M.P. for Cochrane Su- ' perior was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate at a packed, enthusiastic nomination meeting in Kapuskasing Friday evening. Deputy Prime Min- ister Jean Chretien told the crowd gathered that a new liberal adminis- tration under John Turn- er would preserve the best of the past but ac- cept the challenge of the managed government capable of responding to the demands for econ- omic development and job creation in Canada. Penner, in his re- marks, emphasized his experience of 16 years as an M.P., his commit- ment to this Northern Ontario riding and to his long list of achieve- ments for all the com- munities of the constit- uency. The Liberal Party, he stressed is a party which is positive in its policy thrusts. It is for Canada, it's own flag, national anthem, - constitution and the person of a Can- adian Governor Gener- al. The Liberal Party is for medicare, a system of social security, world peace, and equal op- portunity for all, in- cluding women, youth and minority groups. | said, "is that the Pro- gressive Conservative party tends to be against almost any innovation. The Federal P.C. party tends to be a coalition of complainers."' The Penner Liberal Campaign, he feels is well-organized and ex- perienced. Nothing however, is being taken for granted. Commence TERRACE BAY PUSLIC LIBRARY Candidates' -- Campaigns Desjardins greets Terrace Bay and Schreiber Progressive Conser- vative candidate Guy Desjardins was in Ter- race Bay and Schreiber on Thursday, August 2 introducing himself to the North Shore elector- ate.. Mr. Desjardins is seeking the Cochrane Superior seat in the up- coming Federal Elec- © tion on September 4. He believes that the riding needs a regional re- source development plan. "Cochrane Superior Riding is one that has much potential in Nat- ural Resources," said P.C. candidate Guy Des- jardins, "but the de- velopment of those re- sources will not come about by itself and what is sorely needed is a regional plan and some one"to push that plan." The North Shore area including Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Marathon, Manitouwadge and the new development at Hemlo needs a natural gas supply, according to the federal candidate, instead of having to use coal and oil at terrific cost as well as adding to an already aggravated pollution problem. "'T will work towards the construction of a lateral natural gas line south off Geraldton along the glacial gravel deposit to serve the North Shore," said Des- jardins. "Such a line could be constructed at much less cost than a previously investigated and forgotten project through hard rock along the shore of Lake Sup- erior," stated Guy Des- jardins. This project would have many advantages, including providing some much needed con- . struction jobs, estimated at 200 person-years, work for equipment op- erators and suppliers and would help to launch some -- much needed secondary in- dustry in the area. "*The people along the North Shore should have the same opportunity to share in a Canadian Energy Supply as those citizens from other parts of the riding who hap- pen to live close to the Trans Canada Pipe- line', said Desjardins. "I have a plan to bring about some con- crete action on the in- dustrial mineral - tial of the region", said the P.C. candidate. -. Guy Desjardins pro- posed a joint develop- ment agreement be- tween the Federal and Provincial Govern- So sateen nentemerer ments, which he said would be greatly simpli- fied by two progressive Conservative Govern- ments being in power. "The identification de- velopment incentives and economic assistance to uncover the wealth of hidden natural re- sources in the country is -- the responsibility of all governments and by joint and united action", said Desjardins. "Through intensive aeromagnetic and field investigation funded by the Canadian and On- tario Governments and development assistance tied into over specific periods of time, we can attract private sector mining and industrial firms to go over our re- gion acre by acre*', said the Federal candidate. Mr. Desjardins noted that Natural Resources belong to the people and the government of the people cannot wait for development to happen by chance, therefore it must be planned, pur- sued and pushed. "I plan to push", said Guy Desjardins. One of the principal problems facing the Forest Industry in the Cochrane-Superior Ri- ding and that it remains continued on page 10, Miaiticultural Assoc. Shares the Wealth The Terrace Bay/Lake Superior Multicultural Association made a donation to the local Scout and Guide movements from the money raised by the Intercultural Festival. The cheques are to be split between Terrace Bay and Schreiber and represent an attempt to share the success of the event which depended entirely upon trail activating the or-° ganization and meeting hundreds of electors where they live and work. "'It is important for me," said the M.P., "that we register a strong liberal vote in the 'riding. It will certainly strengthen my. hand in the new Parliament of Canada after September 4."' Mr. Penner will re- turn to the North Shore communities early in volunteer support.
