French Language Education Sought The Terrace Bay Schreiber News was asked to print the fol- lowing letter to the French-speaking resi- dents of Terrace Bay. It is my feeling that this would set a precedent for printing articles in other minority lan- guages and the '"'News"' intends to remain an English language news- paper. I have translated the article to the best of my limited ability and wish the authors success with their project. I think that they may even find sup- port in the English- speaking community for their endeavours be- cause there are many who would like their English speaking child- ren to have the benefit of a second language. For those who pre- fer, the article is avail- able in French at the "'News" office. Lynne C. Badger, Editor After having worked on a project concerning French language classes for our children, I would like to share my per- sonal opinion with you in case you have forgot- ten the advantages of our French language. Like most French-speak- ing residents I received my education in French from the first grade to the twelfth grade. The English language was introduced to me in the third grade, but I al- ready had a good under- standing of the lan- guage because I knew many little English friends. ENGAGEMENT Mr. & Mrs. Pat Bourguignon are pleased to announce the engagement of their Debbie Shane Son of Mr. & Mrs. George Riley. The wedding will take place August 11th, 1984 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's United daughter Church, Schreiber THANK YOU The Cosgrove Family would like to thank everyone who helped celebrate Austin's 80th Birthday Anna's To donated food, their help and also those who sent best wishes. Austin and Soe and___ Sister Anniversary. 25th those who Dodie Cosgrove & Family Here in our small town of Terrace. Bay, there are many French families but there is a lack of communication and participation. We are trying to obtain French classes for our children so they will have the advantage of writing and reading in addition to speaking and understanding the lan- guage. I am convinced that in order to preserve our language and cul- ture, our children must be educated in a totally French environment un- til they have attained grade 4 at which time they may take subjects in the English lan- guage if they wish. If the parents of to- day do not accept this as a way to preserve their mother language, I can predict the disappear- ance of the language in one generation.
