They sang out the latest news at street corners and were sometimes refer- red to as "walking newspapers."' Criers al- so announced the time of upcoming events and town meetings. With the rise of newspapers as a mass medium, town cri- ers largely became ob- solete until today. The traditional town crier could be easily identified by his tri- corne hat and hand bell. The uniform also in- cluded a shirt with lace cuffs and jabot (lace collar and fall) vest, waistcoat rimmed with buttons. and braid, breeches and boots. Participants in the Bi- centennial Town Crier Festival and Cry-Off are encouraged to develop a costume appropriate to the heritage and inte- rests of their commun- ity. Participants will be judged equally on the following: 1) Uniform - design; 2) Speech Contest - ori- ginality, Bicentennial Community and com- position; 3) Presentation - general decorum, poise and delivery; 4) Voice - annuncia- tion, quality and pro- jection. Each crier will per- form for no more than two minutes. Cries may be in either English or French. There is no age limit to participants who may be either male or female. There will be at least five judges, includ- ing one representative from Nordair and one provincial Official. Others will be appointed regionally. Participants will be res- ponsible for their own travel and accommoda- tions at the Regional Festivals. Join in the Celebra- tions of Ontario's 200th year. The first graduation of the Women Into Trades & Technology program (WITT) was Women Into Trades and Technology held recently at Confederation College with 15 graduates. The 18-week program is designed to introduce, educate and direct women to future training and employment in skilled trades and technology areas. The first segment of the program provides students with the general theoretical and practical training using a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to most trades. A second module provides an opportunity for students to receive practical exposure in specific trade areas. A final component provides students with field placement in trades or technology in business and industry.
