Dear Karen: Could you help to give a little girl gain some well-earned recognition and relieve her disap- pointment with CFNO Radio? The little girl is ten year old Kellina Cooper. During May, Kellina was thrilled to place first in the Schreiber Public School's public speaking competitions (junior di- vision). Her excitement really grew as it was an- nounced that following the next level of com- petition with 1st and 2nd place winners from Ter- race Bay, Marathon and Manitouwadge, the final 1st place winners (junior and intermediate divi- sions) would receive a very special prize in addition to the usual plaque. CFNO radio has offered to tape the speeches of both win- ners and play them on the radio. The big day arrived and Kellina again came first among a group of excellent competitors. And again she heard the news that she would soon be off for her taping session at CFNO. Quite a dream-come- true for a grade four student! This week the dream dissolved. In an appa- rent misunderstanding of communication, it ap- pears that CFNO had promised to tape one speech - that of the: intermediate winner - whereas the _ school representatives under- stood them to have of- fered two spots. Not wanting to break the school's commitment to Kellina, Schreiber Pub- lic School principal Wayne Tessier dis- cussed the problem with the Men's Teachers Federation, who actually offered to pay CFNO the commercial rate to play Kellina's speech. It seemed the dream would come true after all. However, it was not to be, as CFNO reject- ed the money, saying three minutes was. too long for a commercial spot. The bottom line was that Kellina's speech would not be aired, paid for or not! And Mr. Tessier was faced with the uncom- fortable task of telling Kellina she would not, after all, receive her prize. It was time for Mom to try to come to the rescue. Knowing the "'NEWS"' staff to be a compassionate crew, I decided to ask you to publish Kellina's pic- ture as a "consolation prize". Kellina would be. very happy. = How about it, Ms. Editor? Sincerely, : udie Cooper EDITOR's REPLY: I met with Judie and her daughter Kellina to dis- cuss this problem. I sat and listened to the most interesting, well spok- en speech that ever came out of the mouth and mind of a 10 year old. And I indeed felt compassion for this ill- fated girl. The speech titled "Laughter", in my op- inion, would have made an ideal three minutes spot on the radio ... but who am I to make this assumption. I shall let you decide (Kellina's speech is featured in this week's "NEWS"). We at the "NEWS" support Kellina as well as any other student, in their endeavours in life.. Not wishing to add to her disappointment, as CFNO did, we have chosen to publish this very worthwhile news item on our front page, for all of our readers to enjoy. Congratulations on an excellent presentation Kellina. We at the ""'NEWS" choose to support. our local ta- lent! i meen eSiecials Highliner, 454 g.
