The province's citizen- ry will be commemorat- ing Ontario's Bicenten- nial with a host of par- ades and parties, fairs and festivals in a year- long tribute to 200 years of building. Festivities will be as diverse as you could ex- pect in a province as varied as Ontario. Look for a Queen Victoria look-a-like contest in Lakefield, hot air bal- loon races in Barrie, an apple pie bake-off in Aylmer and a 1,000-sol- dier re-enactment of a battle at Prescott. On the grand scale festivities will include a re-enactment of the 1500-mile canoe trip from Lachine, Quebec to Old Fort William at Thunder Bay by stud- ents of Lakehead Uni- versity who will retrace the route used by the fur traders 200 years ago. Two of Ontario's Great Lakes ports will celebrate seafaring his- tory when spectacular tall ships from around the world dock in Toron- to and Kingston. The Bicentennial marks the arrival 200 years ago of the United Empire Loyalists who laid much of the social foundation for present day life in Ontario. These people left the United States after the American War of Inde- pendence to continue living under monarch- ist rule in the British colony to the north. The Loyalists joined with the earlier French settlers and Native in- habitants to form On- tario's first major settle- ments. Celebrations, however, will go beyond the first settlers to Cash for Your Tax Refund 85% of your refund given 20 N. Ontarians can celebrate their di- verse heritage with roots all over the globe. Grass roots involve- ment is the key to the party and the Govern- ment of Ontario is en- couraging communities to organize their. own Bicentennial celebra- tions. Some 760 of Ont- ario's 799 municipali- ties have indicated their participation. Ontarians have a lot to celebrate. In Brantford, Alexander Graham Bell developed his idea of the telephone; in Toronto, Frederick Banting dis- covered insulin; and in Kingsville, Jack Miner saved the Canada Goose from extinction. These are just a few highlights from Ontario history that will be celebrated in the Bicentennial. This year Ontario will be visited by both Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II and His Holiness Pope John Paul TY. During Her Majesty's July visit, the Queen will tour many areas of the province, while the September visit of the Pope to Toronto and the Martyrs' Shrine at Mid- land will put Ontario in the world spotlight. 'Celebrating Togeth- er' is the Bicentennial theme and this column will be bringing you up to date with reports on how communities across Ontario are joining to- gether with an assort- ment of parties, from levees to strawberry so- cials as well as descript- ions of the people and places that have be- come part of Ontario's mosaic over the last 200 years.
