We respond when we are notified, and similiar to other ambulance services in areas and communi- ties the same size as ours, we work with stand-by staff. We do not have a call volume to justify full time staff. When a call is received, the stand-by crew are notified, proceed to the vehicle, and then to the scene. A chronic and usually very exagger- ated complaint. from the public is "What took you so long to get here?", and I can cer- tainly understand and identify with persons waiting for help to arrive in an emergency. The usualy delay for ambu- lance response time is caused by the individual not knowing the Ambu- lance phone number, and calling everywhere but the ambulance num- ber, and this does create a delay in response time. How many peo- ple know the number to call when they are faced with an emergency? It's listed in the Phone Di- rectory under AMBU- LANCE for both Schrei- ber and Terrace Bay (825-9442). Other delays may be caused for the following reasons: weather and road conditions, loca- tion of the emergency, the ambulance may be in the garage for servic- ing or on a long-distance trip to Thunder Bay; then you must wait for the ambulance to ar- rive from the next com- munity - the ambulance may be out on another emergency. We do not keep an ambulance on every street corner wait- ing for an emergency to occur. We do, and will continue to respond to all emergencies when we are notified. As Don Ross explain- ed to the Council, this is a privately owned and operated service, with a satellite service oper- ated out of Terrace Bay. It is not a Municipal ser- vice, but an area ser- vice covering a large area of the North Shore. When anyone has con- cerns or complaints, they should be directed to the ambulance ser- vice, not the hospital. In your article, you encourage people to "'stand up and defend yourselves," well this is what this letter is all about. Contrary to some people's opinion, with the very few facts and figures they have at their disposal, we have a very good ambulance service in this area, and ~ we will continually strive to provide the best in care and transporta- tion for the sick and in- jured. Whenever a per- son feels they have a justified complaint or question, call me, get the facts and figures and the problem will be dealt with accordingly. Yours truly, Patrick J.
