Sometimes being number one is not such a good thing! Figures re- leased recently by Statistics Canada show that the leading cause of death in Canada is still heart disease. When combined with deaths due to stroke, one_reali- zes the need for the continuance of medical research into our na- tion's major health problem - heart disease and stroke. The Ontario Heart Foundation has support- ed vital heart and stroke research and education in Ontario for many years and will continue to do so until the prob- lem has been conquer- ed. February is "Heart Month' in Canada and "the month during which the Foundation con- ducts its annual fund- raising campaign. Thou- | sands of volunteer can- vassers will be going door-to-door asking for contributions to the "Heart Fund". The provincial objective for the 1984 "Heart Fund" campaign is $9,050,000 and from this amount, 89 per cent will be di- rected into medical re- search and education in Ontario. Laurentian Publishing employee wins award The "NEWS" is plea- sed to announce that Patricia (Pat) Johnson who is a senior reporter with. the Northern Ontario Business in Sud- bury, has been named winner of the 1983 me- dia award presented by the Ontario Forest In- dustries Association. Pat Johnson is a na- tive of Cochrane and a graduate in journalism from Sudbury's Cam- brian College. She has been employed by Lau- rentian Publishing Ltd. (sister paper of the ""NEWS") since 1980 - first as reporter for a Sudbury weekly (North- ern Life) and then with Northern Ontario Busi- ness. During the last 22 years, she has reported on various aspects of the forest industry. Sibley Ski Tour This is just a reminder to register now for the 7th Annual Sibley Ski Tour which is scheduled to take place on March 3rd, 1984. Distances are mark- ed at 20 km, 40 km, or 50 km. Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 223 The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary Br. #223 was held in the Legion Hall on Sunday, January 29th with President Addie Beaulieu presiding. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read by Secretary Pam Jones and the treasur- er's report was given by Treasurer Lillian Belliveau. Mrs. Dorothy Ken- ney was then initiated and welcomed into the Auxiliary. Installation of our new Warden, Mrs. Dolly Sit- ko then took place. President Addie was al- so very pleased to an- nounce that Mrs. Marion Burns will be Dolly's.assistant for the ensuing year. Presentation of 15 year service pins were then given to Yuon Ro- chon, Rose Marie Thorpe and Dolly Sit- ko. A motion was made to purchase a gift for the New Years Baby. A discussion was held regarding the annual Birthday Party; and a motion was made to hold this party on June 16th. This will be a supper for all members followed by a dance in the evening. The date for our An- nual Poppy Day Tea will be Nov. 3rd and _ all convenors will be work- ing hard to make this another successful Bazaar. Guest speaker for the 'evening was Branch 1st Vice President George Churney, who spoke on the upcoming events 'of the Legion. The Branch has once again started "Happy Hour" on Fri- days from 5 to 7 p.m. with many more events coming up in the near future. Be sure and drop down to the Legion and join in all the fun. The "Pot of Gold" was won by Cathy Pap- ineau. The next, regular meeting will be held on Sunday Feb. 26th. See you there.
