The Council of the Township of Manitou- wadge would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours all the best in 1984. Although things have been rela- tively quiet, the Town- ship has been busy pre- paring for the summer of 1984. Residential Housing In late December the town Council met with their engineers, Mar- shall-Macklin Mona- ghan, at that time pre- liminary plans for some one thousand lots were presented, these were pared down to four hun- dred potential for 1984. Noranda Mines (Hemlo) has since announced that they will construct between one hundred and thirty and one hun- dred and fifty houses in Manitouwadge in 1984. This construction, coup- led with construction by private developers will certainly put construct- ion well over the two hundred mark for 1984. At this point a thirty apartment complex for single employees will be constructed by Noranda Mines. Industrial Just recently Algoma Electrical Distributors Ltd., opened their doors for business. They can be found on Black Road (826-3281). The town- ship also welcomes Pier- man Construction to the community. This com- pany recently purchased property in the industri- al area. A number of other companies are in the process of purchas- ing land in the industrial area, as details are final- ized, company names, etc., will be released in future updates. Commercial Area . As mentioned in past updates, the township of Manitouwadge has en- dorsed the concept of a downtown Mall: Hall- mark Hotels Ltd. of Tor- onto has been com- missioned to do a feasi- bility study in this re- gard. The study is to be released by mid-March. In the meantime a good- - ly number of out of town retail business in Mani- touwadge. As details of the Mall concept are available for release we will forward them on. Airport The Manitouwadge Municipal Airport is now licensed. Bicentennial medals to - honour Ontarians Nearly 2,000 On- tarians will be honoured for voluntary service to their communities and through the award of 1,984 Bicen- tennial medals this year. The decision concern- ing who will receive the medals will be made by municipal and Indian Band councils across Ontario over the next few months. Every com- munity will be invited to participate. The programme is de- signed to recognize com- munity service work and voluntarism and is one of the major undertak- ings by the province to celebrate the Bicen- tennial anniversary. 1984 is a significant date in the history of this province and it is appro- priate that during the year we recognize citi- zens who have given of themselves to the bet- terment of our communities and our province. Nominations for med- als will be invited from Ontario communities de- fined as municipalities, unincorporated com- munities in Northern Ontario served by local service boards and In- dian Bands on the following basis: - all of -these will be entitled to nominate one individual to receive the Bicen- tennial medal; however a) municipalities with populations exceeding 200,000 can nominate 12 additional persons; b) municipalities with Bet pele ge exceed- g 100,000 can nomi- nate 10 additional per- sons; c) municipalities with opulations between 0,000 and 100,000 can nominate 6 additional persons; d) municipalities with populations between 10,000 and 20,000 can nominate 4 additional persons; e) municipalities with populations between 5,000 and 10,000 can nominate two addiu- nominate two addition- al persons. Elected officials are not eligible for nomina- tion. Nominations will be made through a resolu- tion passed in council and submitted to a Bi- centennial Awards Committee chaired by Margaret Birch, Parlia- mentary Assistant to the Premier and Chairman of the Cabinet Com- mittee on the Bicen- tennial. Submissions close on June 30, 1984. Individuals and volun- tary organizations will also have an opportunity to nominate people who are considered worthy of recognition by sub- mitting names and pro- files to the awards com- mittee. Up to 200 med- als will be awarded to people selected by the awards committee on the basis of the sub- missions. Details on how to make submissions will be published in local newspapers.
