For safety and | savings, keep tire pressure up by DIANA POOKE Under-inflated tires can cost you a small for- tune. They could also cost you your life. Sur- veys show that most car owners keep their tires at a lower pressure than recommended by car and tire manufacturers. A Shell Canada spot _ check of 250 cars show- ed that the most com- mon problem, which oc- curred in almost half the cars checked, was under-inflated tires. Running a car with tire pressures lower than recommended is not only potentially dan- gerous but is also costly. Underinflated tires take more power to make them roll. This increas- ed rolling resistance sig- nificantly increases gasoline consumption. If tire pressures are only 10 percent below the recommended level, then the gasoline bill will increase by two per- cent. If pressures are allowed to be as much as 20 percent too low, and they often are, then the gasoline bill will in- crease by five percent. Under-inflated tires also wear out more quickly. A tire that's under- inflated can lose one- fifth of its useful life. On the other hand, if tire pressures are too high, although there will be slightly beneficial ef- fect on the gasoline bill, it will be at the expen- se of road grip and safety. With over-in- flated tires, a car's handling characteristics may change complete- ly. For long journeys on fast roads, tire pres- sures can be increased slightly. The correct amount of the increase is shown in your car owner's handbook. But again, do not over- inflate tires as it could adversely affect hand- ling and be dangerous. The type of tire on your car affects fuel eco- nomy. When the time comes to buy tires, con- sider radials. Radial tires give better gasoline economy than bias-ply tires because they offer less rolling resistance. Radials will reduce fuel consumption by 3.5-6 per cent. In addition, bias-ply tires will wear more quickly and need to be replaced after ap- proximately. 40,000 km as compared with the expected 60-70,000 km life of a radial tire. For those who have radials, the "radial bul- ge" can disguise a tire that is under-inflated. Use a good quality tire pressure guage to check your radials. Check all tire pressures at least once a month at your service station. It costs nothing, it saves money, and it may save your life. >) GET CASH! Sell Anything With J poet 4 COURNET Correct me if 'm wrong Just a note to say that I'm living That I'm not among the dead; Though I'm getting more forgetful And more mixed up in the head. For sometimes I can't remember When I stand at the foot of the stairs If I must go up for something Or, I've just come down from there. And before the fridge so often My poor mind is filled with doubt; Have I just put food away, or Have I come to take some out! And there's times when it is dark out With my nightcap on my head, I don't know if I'm retiring Or just getting out of bed. So, if it's my turn to write to you There's no need in getting sore. I may think that I have written And don't want to be a bore. So remember ... I do love you, And I wish that you were here. But now it's nearly mail time So I must say goodbye, dear. There I stood beside the mailbox, With a face so very red. Instead of mailing you my letter, I had opened it instead! Author Unknown Are you guilty ... continued from page 3 By-Law #242 (a) - "No_ person shall drive a motorized snow vehicle between the 'hours of midnight and 7 a.m. along or across the highways or parts of highways (all streets of the town of Terrace Bay) under the jurisdiction of the township of Ter- race Bay. As listed in schedule (a) - if one is caught doing so, there will be a fine issued in the amount of $300.00. Also note that if you are caught trespassing on private property (without the written permission of the prop- erty owner) you are sub- ject to a fine of $500.00. So, if you're one of the guilty people, watch out. Keep it legal - and make sure that you know the laws regarding the use of snowmobiles.
