letters to the editor "The calm after the storm" Dear Karen: While reading the October 24th, 1983 minutes of the Lake Superior Board of Education, I was pleased to note, in particular, Resolution #300/83 moved and seconded by T. Delaney and J. Figliomeni, and carried by the Board, to wit: "The Board extends a vote of thanks and confidence to our Director, our Superintendent of Operations, and to our Principals and Vice-Principals in recognition of their committment, their abilities, and their sensitivies to the Boards' priorities." Many others must feel as I do, that the present atmosphere of serenity, as evidenced by the resolution, is a welcome development. Such an attitude is more conducive to the efficiency needed to make wise resolutions of problems than one of confrontation, though evidently not as worthy of more prominent publication. Yours truly, S.M. ""Book on Jackfish?" Dear Ms. Park: I am trying to track down a book on Jackfish written by Jane Pool in 1976. Does your paper sell this book? Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Ken Fenwick Editor's Reply: Sorry Ken ... but I have no idea as to where you might locate this particular publication. If any of our readers happen to know of such a book and where it might be obtained, please forward your reply to: K.G. Fenwick, Regional Mineral Resources Co-ordinator, Ontario Government Building, Ministry of Natural Resources, P.O. Box 5000, Thunder Bay, Ontario. P7C 5G6 or phone 1-475-1331. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, December 7, 1983, page 3 Book on native population A new and unique book detailing the settle- ment patterns of On- tario's Native commun- ity, has been publish- ed by the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture. 'sDistribution of Native Population in On- tario by Census Area, 1981, provides the most recent census informa- tion about the patterns of residential settle- ment of Ontario's Native population. The figures have been broken down into four categories of Native peo- ples: Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Metis and Inuit, by sex for the province and census divisions, and by age and sex for urban Ski Thunder JUMP IN THE CAR... The publication is the only one of its kind for the province of Ontario and will be an invalu- able source to govern- ment organizations when planning Native programmes. In the past years, the distribution of Native populations were esti- mated, but because of this new publication, they can now rely on exact figures. This should also prove to serve the Native com- munities of Ontario more efficiently. The Native book is just one in a series of publications produced by the ministry as part of its ethnocultural data base. Additional books of stats outlining the rich and complex ethnic makeup of Ontario are also available. "Distri- bution of Native Popu- lation in Ontario by Cen- sus Area, 1981", also should be of special interest to post-second- ary institutions and oth- er community organiza- tions and agencies. Copies are available for the cost of $3.00 at the Ontario Government Bookstore, 880 Bay Street, Toronto. Out- of-town customers can write to Publication Ser- vices Section, 5th Floor, 880 Bay Street, Ontario. M7A 1N8 or in North- western Ontario they may call Zenith 67200. As in past years, residences, farmland and outbuildings will continue to be assessed together. But the farm tax rebate will increase from 50 to 60%. And while the gross production value for eligibility will remain at $8,000 for the majority of the province, it will be reduced to $5,000 for northern and eastern Ontario (northern Ontario is defined as that area north of the southern boundaries of Haliburton and Muskoka. And eastern Ontario is the area east of the western boundary of Northumberland, Victoria and Peterborough counties).
