(P rofile This Week Meet Tim Delaney (before he leaves us!) Word was recently re- ceiyed that Father Tim Delaney and his family of Schreiber are soon to be transferred to Sault Ste. Marie. Tim, Marg and their two sons have been living in Schreiber since Tim's transfer there in May of '81 from Nipigon. Tim and Marg have fully enjoyed their stay in the town of Schreiber and will in- deed miss the town, the people, the atmosphere and everything about this area. "The people here are very open and friendly," comments Tim. "We will miss the friends that we have made over the brief time we have been here. I. will also miss the invol- vement of the commun- ity, the sense of public trust which has been placed in me, but, I look forward to the challenge of a big city parish."' Tim was born, rais- ed and schooled in Lon- don, Ontario. He attend- ed York University for his B.A. and then went on to the Trinity Col- lege for his Masters in Divinity. From there Tim tells it like this: "On May ist, 1978 I was made Deacon. On May 3rd, I graduated. On May 6th we left Toronto and May 8th, we arrived in Nipigon at my first parish. The fol- lowing Sunday I gave my first sermon. So as you can see, things have been happening pretty fast."' Tim and his family stayed in Nipigon for almost three years to the day they arrived. "In Nipigon I had four con- gregations with the total attendance of all four to be around 45. 13 from Nipigon - 11 from Schreiber - 9 in Red Rock and 7 in Dorion."' It was then that Tim set some goals to work to- ward. "In two years I hoped to double the at- tendance of all parish- es. That occurred within one year. I also set goals for the churches to be- come self-supporting within three years. That happened within two years." He was making some headway. In July of '81 the Parish was split with Schreiber be- coming separate. The process involved peti- tions from all the Parish- es plus one from St. John's, and this petit- ion went to the Bishop requesting that Tim and Marg be transferred to Schreiber on a full-time one-point charge. The decision was left up to Tim and Marg and they decided that it was something that they wished to do. So move they did ... and they have never regretted their choice. When they arrived in 1981, St. John's was low in at- tendance, with about 45 members in the congr- egation. Again Tim set himself some goals. "I again wanted to double the attendance within two years, which has happened. I also wanted the church to be self- supporting within four years. I was right on schedule but with my transfer coming up, this may put us_ behind somewhat."' A lot of changes have been made and a lot of good things have hap- pened within the church since Tim's arrival. But Tim says they couldn't have happened without the help and the support of the members. To- gether they have: (1) established a good work- ing vestry board of eld- ers (parish council) that meets monthly and through this board, peo- ple now have a sense of ownership in the parish. They see themselves as being responsible for things getting accom- plished. (2) the de- velopment of the sense of belonging and the feeling as a family with- in the parish. When people join the church they can now have a feeling of family to- getherness, a caring and enthusiastic feeling. They are not just there to attend services. (3) the development of parish groups. (eg) the formation of the Sunday . evening Study Group - a group involved in ob- taining their associate ~ degree in Theology. (4) the development of a girls' auxiliary, a junior auxiliary and a boys' league. Total member- ship in these youth groups average about 30. (5) the coming- of-age of the Sunday School which now has a total of about 45 child- ren. The Sunday School programme is rather unique; being that all the teachers design their own programme and are responsible for their curriculum. Terrace Bay with a focal service in the community (7) They have an active Bridge Club which is jokingly referred to as "The St. Bridges Society'? and they meet twice a month. » An indicator of growth within St. John's is the Anglican's In-Mission Programme which is a two year programme de- signed to heighten un- derstanding and _ inter- est in the mission of the church and also to help raise funds for a 10 year programme of Mission Development. The na- tional goal was $40 mil- lion to be raised over a period of five years. Nationally they have re- ceived committments for over $55 million - 540 per cent of the goal reached by St. John's Parish which is the high- est of the diocese and one of the highest na- tionally. Other projects that Tim has been support- ing in his years in Schreiber are a regular visiting programme and counselling program- me for the whole com- munity. When he's not busy with Church matters Tim has several items of interest that he likes to donate his spare time to. They will be sadly missed by several local residents. heavily involved in the Schreiber school clo- sure issue. He was also the Legion Padre, a position from which he just resigned last week. He has been very in- volved in various clubs Church. He did curl ° but due to lack of time, he has had to give that up in order to donate John's Anglican more of his spare time to the school board. Marg and Tim are also in charge of the Transient Welfare for Schreiber. When he's not involved in any of the above he enjoys reading, cook- ing, politics, computers and bridge. Tim was also appointed by the Bishop to be Dean of Thunder Bay for a term of one year. When asked who was replacing him when he left, Tim said that no decision has been made as of yet but an announcement should be made in the very near future. So, there you have it. From Toronto, to Nipi- gon, to Schreiber, and now to a bigger parish, St. Matthew's in the Soo. Farewell Tim, Marg, J.J. and Michael.
