The Schreiber Eco- nomic Development Committee hosted an Industry and Trade Seminar at the Schrei- ber Community Centre last Thursday evening. Over 40 participants took part in this evening session, which was de- signed to give them the basics on innovation and development of more industry and trade for the Schreiber area. Larry Dunwoody from the E.D.C. in Schreiber was the major organiz- er for the event and through he and _ his committee, they were able to provide the audi- ence with an informative seminar on topics rang- ing from funding, mar- keting, developing a small business, retail and manufacturing, among many others. Guest speakers for the evening were Bill Moko- mela from ITC/DREE in Thunder Bay; Wayne McLellan of the Minis- try of Industry and Trade in Thunder Bay; and Doug Chamberlain and Bob Pollock both from the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Toronto. Wayne McLennan, Chairman for the semi- nar, spoke briefly on the problems of small busi- ness; problems that the small business man is constantly facing. These problems include: site location, exporting, transportation, manage- ment, energy manage- ment, industrial en- gineering, technology, inventors, productivity, marketing, starting a business, licensing and many more everyday concerns. He related to the participants that Ca- nada has been placing a great deal of emphasis on the exporting of Canadian products this year, and many aven- ues can be sought in re- gards to this matter. Bill Mokomela was able to give the audience a break-down on the new Federal Grant Pro- grammes as well as the funding which is avail- able to the businessman from the Provincial pro- grammes. He discussed ways and means for the business man to obtain funding and where to go for the particular type of funding that they re- quired. He quickly explained funding structures of the Industrial Regional De- velopment Progamme (IRDP) and also with NORDA. Doug Chamberlain gave a lengthy break- down on marketing tech- niques. He mentioned that requests for mark- eting advice has increas- ed drastically over the past 2 or 3 years and this is due to high interest rates, high unemploy- ment and poor market- ing areas. He went on the define marketing as being all business out- side of manufacturing, and that includes all re- tailers and wholesalers alike. He explained that marketing functions in- volve such areas as: market design, credit/ collection functions, ac- counting, quality con- trol, after-sales-ser- vice and warranties, among others. He stressed the fact that you must first know what your goals are and then set out to meet those goals. The businessman must know who his competitors are, pricing policies, pack- aging techniques, sales strategies and proper promotion in order to survive in this day and age of the big consumer market. Bob Polluk was able to provide the participants with valuable informa- tion on the retailing end of business. He claimed that most small busi- nesses don't do well, due to lack of planning. They don't know where they are going or what their goals are in life. He explained the aspects of the Small Business Management Develop- ment Programme which is set up to assist the small businessman with private consultants, usually university stud- ents who are trained to assist in these areas. continued on page 12: Barrister E.W.
