3 Recreation Northwest - "Sharing Together We Grow" A Press Conference was held in the Press Club of St. Joseph's Heritage last Wednes- day in order to familiar- ize the media with the upcoming Recreation Northwest Conference which is scheduled to take place at the Valhal- la Inn on October 20th to 23rd. Media personnel were given first hand infor- mation on the planning for this event as well as a list of the groups and organizations who will be attending this unique conference. Herb Gray stated that the Planning Committee consisted of 17 members ranging from Kenora to Manitouwadge and these concerned people travelled a great dis- tance to attend .various conferences and meet- ings in order to organ- ize this great feat. "We wanted to get as many people involved in this conference as possible and through hard work, we have managed to bring together over 300 delegates from a total of 52 communities for a weekend of seminars, exhibits and just general interest," stated Gray. The Ministries of Tour- ism and Recreation and Northern Affairs are the major sponsors of the Conference and are be- ing assisted by a num- ber of groups through- out the region including Public Library Terrace Bay POT 2WO Ontario the N.W.O. Regional Sports Council, Thunder Bay Parks and Recrea- tion, Ontario Arenas As- sociation, Boards of Education, etc. Northern Affairs Min- ister Leo Bernier recent- ly announced that his Ministry will be contri- buting $13,100 towards this event. He stated that "the Confer- ence will give these people a chance to joint- ly plan skill develop- ment, programmes and information, sharing for Northwestern recrea- tion. Pouliot won the nomina- tion by -acclamation at the party's convention in Nipigon on Sunday, Oc- tober 2nd. Pouliot said that he would "fight for the elimination of the pro- vincial sales tax on all products manufactured or assembled in North- ern Ontario. For a re- duction in the provincial tax for Northerners to help us cope with the higher cost of living. For the establishment of a Contingency Fund for' municipalities with one industry, to help them maintain essential servi- ces and plan for the future should the main employer decide to pull' out so that the citizens will not be left holding the bag."' The NDP's new cand- idate was flanked on the platform by the party's leader Bob Rae, Deputy leader Jim Foulds from Thunder Bay's Port Ar- thur Riding, local MPP Jack Stokes and the party's industry critic Floyd Laughren from Sudbury's Nickel Belt Riding. © The tormer Reeve of Manitouwadge was nominated by Terrace Bay Reeve Dave Speer, who said that Pouliot nomination and also MPP. Jack Stokes who seconded the nomination. was uniquely suited to be the Lake Nipigon Riding's representative because he had an un- derstanding of the mi- ning and forestry indus- tries "and he has made it a point to become familiar with transpor- tation, and those are the ~ three major industries in the Riding." 'He is a franco-Ont- arian, and he has an understanding of the problems of our first citizens, the native peo- ple. I can think of no- body in any political party in this Riding who would make a better member."' Pouliot's nomination was seconded by the present member MPP Jack Stokes. Stokes said that he had his eye on Pouliot as a successor in the seat, for a long time. "Tf you could have seen, as I have seen, the manner in which he has represented the inter- ests of the people in this area in such forms as the Thunder Bay Municipa! League, you would know why I am seconding this nomination today." Stokes went on to say that he would be re- maining active in the affairs of Northern Ont-* ario after his retirement at the next election and would be supporting Pouliot in the election. . leadership. have always met inde- pendently; often ser- vices were duplicated and time was spent solv- ing problems when the solutions were already available."' Resource people will be brought in from as far away as the North- West Territories for this event. The cost of the Con- ference has been kept at a minimum in order that everone may be able to attend. $50.00 covers the entire weekend of seminars, including var- ious socials and ban- quets, plus three nights of occupancy at the Val- halla Inn. The low cost will help to promote this "working conference' with practical take-home information. No one will be restricted from part- icipating because of the high costs so the result will be a low cost sem- inar with top quality Terrace The regular meeting of the Terrace Bay Council was held on Tuesday, October 11 in the Council Chambers. Councillor Chapman was not in attendance. Reeve Speer called the meeting to order. A motion was made to adopt the minutes of the September 26th meet- ing. Correspondence: Upon receiving a re- uest for a donation to the Cancer Research So- ciety, Council agreed to donate the sum of $100. Cullmar Const. Ltd., requested permission to connect to municipal wa- ter lines in the industrial subdivision. Council gtanted permission to Cullmar to connect a water line, to service their building and the Kodila building in ac- cordance with their de- cision. N.O.M.A. (North- western Ontario. Muni- cipal Association) re- quested that Council send a representative to Toronto on October 20th to present their resolu- tions to the Cabinet.. Council decided that they would pass on sending down a delegate as they have no resolu- tions. The Police Associa- tion requested a date for the commencement of contract negotiations. On Thursday, October 20th, there will be a 'Re- creation Fair', compris- ed of exhibitors who will be showing a variety of recreational services and equipment. '"'It's difficult for the out- lying areas to purchase equipment, usually sight-unseen. This will give everyone a chance to see just what is avail- able to the Recreation Departments from all across Canada," said Herb Gray. The displays and exhibits will be open to the general public on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will in- clude exhibitors from Resurface Corporation, Paris Playground Equip- ment Ltd., Arenaequip, the Ontario Bicentennial Committee, Hockey On- tario Development Committee and Katimi- vak. Special guests who are expected to attend this conference include the Honourable Reuben, C. Baetz, Minister of Tourism and Recreation and Mr. Don Percy from C.F.R.N. in Edmonton. Approximately 15 peop- le from the Terrace Bay area will also be in attendance for this 'one- of-a-kind' conference, so..."watch out Terrace Bay...you're in for some great recreational plan- ning."' Bay Council Notes Council acknowledged the receipt of the letter and will establish a date for such negotiations in the near future. The Intermunicipal Committee on Family Violence requested that Council designate a member to sit on this committee. Councillor George Ramsey has ag- reed to do this and Council endorsed the mandate of this commit- fee. A memorandum was received from the Ser- vice Employees Inter- national #268 regarding contract negotiations on the definition of relief employees. A motion was made that the memorandum be endor- sed by Council. A re- quest was made from Chief Tom Tack for him to attend as a panelist on a course in police mana- gement Level I to be held in Aylmer, Ontario. Council granted their permission for him to attend. New Business: Five applications were reviewed in the Com- mittee of the Whole for the position of Plumbing Inspector. One applica- tion was excepted and this will be announced when Council receives verification of the appli- cant. Discussion was given to the erection of Christ- mas decorations for the downtown area. Larry Simons will look into the costs, etc. of new decor- ations. Council is seeking a replacement for Mrs. M. Hamilton on the Pine- wood and the McCaus- land Hospital Boards. It was decided that council would advertise for pub-- lic applications. Restaurant negotia- tions between the muni- cipality and the restau- rant owner of the Rec. Centre, regarding rental increases will commence shortly. Rent is the only item to be discussed as, the contract still has one year remaining. Plans are in the pro- cess of being made for the Township Christmas Party which is to be held on November 26th at the Legion. Joe Kennedy was asked to look after all arrangements for this event. The Horticultural So- ciety requested permis- sion to plant a flower garden at the cemetery on the new embank- ment. Permission was given by Council for this to take place. = Michael Parkinson re- quested of Council for their mt on his pro- posed Chrysler dealer- ship which he hopes to start up in Terrace Bay.
