Soccer Tournament The Molson Canadian Chailenge Cup Soccer Tournament for the Senior Club Champion- ship in Canada will be played in Thunder Bay on October 8th to 10th. It is significant that the Challenge Cup is return- ing to Thunder Bay this year since the first event in 1913 was hosted by Fort William. The C.P.R. team from Fort William lost in the semi- finals that year. The cup at that time was known as the Connaught Cup. In 1926, the current Challenge Cup was do- nated by the Football Association of England. In the later years of the 1920's, the Fort William Legion team, and later the Fort Wil- liam Combines, both lost in the finals of the Challenge Cup Tourna- ment. Certainly the his- tory has been here, and now we have the Chal- lenge Cup. Passes for the Mol- son Challenge Cup for the Senior Soccer Club Championship in Cana- da are now available at several outlets. The passes are for the two days of the Tournament scheduled for Thanks- giving weekend. Games will be 'play- ed at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 8th and at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday, Octo- ber 10th. Outlets for the passes include: Mike's Barber Shop on Court Street, the Valhalla Inn (tour- nament headquarters), Perciante and Laprade's Sport Shop, Fresh Air Experience, Calabria Bar, DaVinci Centre and the Italian Hall.. The cost for the pass- es are minimal and day passes can also be ob- tained. Terrace Bay Rod & Gun A large crowd of local shooters, as well as interested onlookers ga- thered together for the Terrace Bay Rod and Gun Club's Annual Tur- key Shoot, which was held recently. Jim Desaulniers of Terrace Bay stood out among local riflemen, winning three turkeys in the' .22 Rimfire compe- titions. In a special event for "Ladies Only", Arlene Godin emerged the win- ner in a field of. 10 ladies. Other winners in the Rimfire events . were: Aaro Halonen, Pat Halo- nen, George Hermes, Henry Kaari, Torry Phinn, Ray Elliston, and' Pat Tees. In the High Power competitions, winners were Preston McKeever and Ray Elliston. Mc- Keever shot 47 out of a possible 50 and Elliston registered a score of 43. Shooting enthusiasts were treated to a rare experience when Marco Tremblay entered the High Power shoot with his black powder muzzle loader. The deep- throated booming report of this firearm and its cloud of powder smoke, was a new experience for most of the onlook- ers. Now Avatabic Beginning Farmer Assistance Program A New Ontario Program to Help Farmers Get Started in Their Own Operation Over the next five years, the Ontario government will be investing up to $135 million to encourage competent new farmers to enter the farming business. This will be done --for qualified applicants -- by making it easier for beginning farmers to meet the present-day high costs of farm loans. How the program works: @ Fhe Ontario government will pay a direct cash rebate for 5 years on the amount of loan interest in excess of 8%, up to a maximum of 5 percentage points. This interest rebate will apply on loan amounts up to a limit of $350,000 per person. @ The loans will be administered by the FCC (Farm Credit Corporation) and other authorized lending institutions including the Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and the Toronto Dominion Bank. ™* @ The program applies to qualified loans granted on or after May 10, 1983. @ Applicants must never have been a farmer before (either for a majority of their time or for a majority of their income) and never owned a viable farm, but must have agricultural experience and/or agricultural education.
