Holidays galore at St. John's by JUDIE COOPER For many kids, the best thing about the whole year is the sum- mer holidays. For others, it's Christmas ... or Easter ... but imagine the fun when summer holidays and _ extra- special holidays all hap- pen in the same week! For a lot of kids, that's exactly what happened at St. John's Anglican Church last week when they attended the an- nual Vacation Church School. The theme this year was "Seasons of the Son" in which holidays of the Church year were studied to show their meaning to children of various ages. "What is God saying to us in this holiday, or, more pre- cisely, Holy day?" was the question of the day in each class, as the children celebrated Ad- vent, Christmas, Epi- phany, Lent and Easter. Crafts were high on the enjoyment list with the kids, with music a Ciose second. Two of the most popular crafts were the Jesse Tree, fashion- ed of pussy willows and decorated with sym- bols of the line of David awaiting the birth of Christ; the making of sand-cast candles in which liquid wax is poured into shaped molds made by the children and allowed to harden into attractive take-home candles. The .youngest children (aged 5-7) really enjoyed cos- tumed plays, pageants and the creation of hanging banners with one section for each special season of the Church year.
