Under the $2.4 bil- lion Special Recovery Projects Program, the federal government is undertaking and bringing to a rapid completion over one hundred priority capi- tal projects. The work at Pukaskwa is includ- ed in a major compo-, nent of the program which provides $220 million for construct- ion over the next four years of works and facilities in support of land and tourism de- velopment. Pukaskwa is a wil- derness park protect- ing 80 km of unspoil- ed Lake Superior coastline. Access by road is limited to the northwest corner of the park and the rest of the park can only be explored on foot or by boat. Marine fa- cilities are essential if Some faces from the past ae visitors are to appre- ciate the park's re- mote, rugged beauty. The proposed de- velopment will in- clude a boat launch, docks and parking lot for public use. There will also be a docking area where equip- ment and supplies needed in the park's interior can be load- ed on boats or bar- ges. Eventually, the marine facility will be 'the starting point for boat tours. Construction of the marine facility will be completed by 1985 and will provide about 50 jobs. Mr. Penner said the Special Recovery Pro- jects Program is de- signed to contribute to economic recovery and employment dur- ing the next two to four years while put- ting in place key facil- ities, such as the ma- rina complex at Pukaskwa, that will provide major public benefits over the longer-term.
