Focus on Forestry The future of the forest industry in North- ern Ontario was the subject of a major con- ference organized in Thunder Bay last week by the federal Liberal party. Ten Members of Par- liament, including two federal Cabinet Minis- ters representing Northern Ontario rid- 'ings, brought together four other federal Cabi- net Ministers and for- estry representatives to the special conference United Church Women by WINNIE CAMPBELL Margaret Smith, President, presided for the regular meeting of the United Church Wo- men which was held on entitled "Focus on For- estry".. The conference was attended by well over one hundred parti- cipants. Officials from federal government de- partments closely con- cerned with forestry- related issues and eco- nomic programs also at- tended the conference. According to the co- chairman Mr. Jack Masters, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Nipigon "the ob- jective of the confer- ence was to give federal Cabinet Ministers the opportunity to hear first- hand the views and con- cerns of the Northern Ontario forestry indus- try in order to formu- late policies and pro- grams that will help the industry develop to its fullest potential. "The objective was met and the meeting also gave the representatives the opportunity to exchange ideas as well as offer excellent perspectives for future -consulta- ference, Mr. Charles Carter, President of Great Lakes Forest Pro- ducts Ltd., stated that "It was a very worth- while event which al- lowed us to personally meet the federal govern- ment. representatives that out of these discus- sions will come many useful recommenda- tions that the federal Cabinet ministers can consider in the future deliberations."' Representatives of the pulp and paper, lumber- ing and transportation industries as well as trade unions and educa- tional institutions played a very active role in dis- cussions which were held during the confer- ence. In terms of recom- mendations, the repre- sentatives from 'the for- ,est industry encouraged the federal representa- tives to be further invol- ved and provide more leadership in all sect- ors of the forest industry D. & H.
