Learn the proper methods of stain remo- val and you won't have a problem, say home eco- nomics specialists of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. During the festive season, furnishings and clothes are prime tar- gets for cranberry sauce, wine, gravy, candle wax and alcohol- ic beverages. Here are some hints for the remo- val of these particular stains. Cranberry sauce and wine can be grouped together as fruit stains. Sponge or soak the stain immediately with cold water -- don't let it dry. If the fabric is washable, soak in an activated en- zyme product, then launder in the hottest water possible for that fabric. Bleach, if neces- sary. Candle wax should be scraped off fabrics with a dull knife. Soak the stained area in cleaning fluid then wash as usual. If a wax color remains, sponge with equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water. Pre-soak gravy stains in an activated enzyme ' product. Pre-treat with a grease solvent such as percholorethylene which is readily available in drugstores, then laun- der. Don't let alcoholic beverage stains dry be- fore trying to remove 'them. Sponge or soak stained fabrics imme- diately in cold water. Wash in warm suds. If the stain remains, soak for a half hour in a solu- tion of 30 millilitres (two tablespoons) hydrogen peroxide in 4.5 litres (one gallon) water. Stains can ruin beau- tiful furnishings and fabrics. Immediate at- tention and proper treat- ment can prevent per- manent staining and re- store items for use on many Christmas days to come.
