PAGE 10 TERRACE BAY NEWS RECREATION REPORT: Continued BADMINTON CLINIC: The Ontario Badminton Association and the Terrace Bay Rec- reation Department will sponsor an adult Badminton clinic in Terrace Bay on September 9th. This clinic will include fun- damentals, game strategies and rules of Badminton. The clinic will be conducted by a qualified instructor and we encourage any adult players (16 years of age and over) to contact the Recreation Office at 3542 and leave your name as soon as pos- sible. There is no charge for this clinic. CYCLING CLINIC: Bob Zeller of the Ontario Cycling Association will be in Terrace Bay on Saturday and Sunday, September 9th and 10th, to operate a Cycling Clinic. The clinic will include a session on Saturday morning from 9 to 12 noon on mechanics of bicycles adjustments, basic riding and what bike riding can lead to. Statistics have proven that after a person has taken this por- tion of the clinic, they will be a 60% safer rider. We hope to operate a Saturday afternoon session in advanced cycling, including racing and touring. On Sunday, a short in=- formal bike tour will be arranged with participants of the clinic. This clinic is open to all bike riders and we would hope you will register your name at the Recreation Office as soon as possible. MEN'S ANNUAL FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Five Terrace Bay teams competed in the championship with the 1978 winners being the Shift 2 Papermakers led by their coach Bob Weaver. Over the two days, the Papermakers won three straight games. The final game was won the Papermakers over the Greenbacks 11-7. Other teams competing were the Beavers of the Technical Department, the Terrors and the Red Dog Inn team. On behalf of the Terrace Bay Fastball League, we would like to thank all persons who volunteered to umpire and help to put the field in shape for the weekend. This league has enjoyed a very successful season and plans are already under- _way for next season's play. CARLTON SHOW BAND COMING TO TERRACE BAY SEPTEMBER 22ND: The very popular and well-known Carlton Show Band is appear- ing in Terrace Bay on September 22nd at the drena. There will be a show followed by a dance. Please refer to page 6 for full details. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Instrumental Music Instruction will re-commence in Schreiben and Terrace Bay in early October. For people interested in learning to play a musical instrument or improving upon their musical ability, this idea should appeal to them. Instruction will be offered again in Brass instruments such as trumpet, french hom, trombone, tuba; Woodwinds such as lute, clarinet and saxaphone; drums; and violin (other instru- ments not mentioned would be by special arrangement). Students receive class instruction in their particular instrument and band (orchestra). Returning students will continue separately from beginners in one group as much as possible. These classes will also include music ap, reciation and music theory. Classes are open to any age and any level. Classes will be held once a week on Monday nights at times to be announced. The cost per student per night will be $6.00 (provided that there are 12 students minimum enrolled in the course). Instruments will be available to students on a rental - purchase plan. There will be approximately 30 classes (weeks) of instructions starting in the first part of October and con- tinuing until late May or early June. "The instructor will be Arthur Lapp, Bachelor of Music Educa- tion, from Thunder Bay who is presently principal tubaist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, part-time instructor of piano and music history at Lakehead University as well as a teacher of private piano in Thunder Bay. He has taught music classes such as these in Marathon for the past three years and initiated instrumental music courses and private piano and theory last year in Nipigon-Red Rock and Schreiber-Terrace Bay, and found them to be well received by both students and commun- ity. Mr. Lapp will also be available to teach private piano (beginner to Grade 8 level) ana theory of music. The first meeting will be held on Monday, September 18th at St. Martin Separate School in Terrace Bay at 7 p.m. Beginning and returning instrumental and piano students please attend.
