PAGE 12 TERRACE BAY NEWS APRIL 5, 19 NORTHERNER CONTESTS FEDERAL LIBERAL SEAT Gaetan Ouellette presents himself as a candidate at the Cochrane Liberal Assoc- iation Nomination Convention Gaetan is highly qualified to seek this office. Gaetan's roots are fimly rooted in Cochrane. His family connections with this area dates back to the ear- ly 30's when Mathias Quel- Tette settled in Harty. There he owned and operated a General Store and was a wood contractor. His exten- sive extended-family is presently engaged in varied ~ professions throughout the area. His maternal grandparents arrived in the area in 1922 and eventually Antoine Ouellette settled with his family on a farm--Ouellette's Bay, Remi Lake, which is also Gaetan's home. Gaetan was born in Kapuskasing, and raised in Harty. He attended the former Academy d'Youville and Kapuskasing Dis- trict High School where in 1970 he eared his Ontario Secon- dary School Honour Graduation Diploma. From 1970-74, Gaetan was studying at the University of Ottawa where he not only earned his B.A, in political science and French but took many and varied courses to satisfy his global interests. Gaetan's success at the University of Ottawa lead, in 1974 . =15, to his being chosen as the Canadian representative to the European Institute of International Superior Studies in Nice, France. "At that time he was the recipient of two scholarships from the Centre of International European Formation. While in France and Belgium, his studies included international rela- tions, international organization, diplomacy and public inter -national law. In 1976-77, Gaetan studied radio and television from the National Institute of Broadcasting. This past winter, Gaetan has been at Queens University where he earned his High School and Elementary Assistant Teaching Diploma. Gaetan's political interests were kindled while in high school through his involvement in School Councils and as found -er and chaiman of the Young Liberal Association. This in- terest was fanned through active participation at political conventions. While in Ottawa, Gaetan spent much of his lei- sure hours either in the House of Commons or studying complex governmental publications. Upon his return from Europe, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Canadian World Federalists Association for the Ottawa Branch. To finance his studies and expand himself further, Gaetan became involved in varied phases of the work force. While in Kapuskasing he worked as a clerk at Perkus Limited and as a labourer for Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company Limited. Ottawa, his jobs ranged. from waiter to terminologist. In 1971, Gaetan launched a part-time military career when he Im joined the Governor General's Footguards. He is still a men of the Canadian Reserve Armed Forces. Besides his general military training, and specialized trade, he was appointed to. varied administrative positions. In 1976-77, he was asked to serve as Regimental Paymaster, In 1974, Gaetan was hired by the Department of Manpower anc Immigration in personnel administration with security <learanes In 1975, he worked for the Department of External Affairs, Canadian International Development Agency in the personnel re= gistry and the Commonwealth section. In 1976, he was Temminologist, documentalist for the Departs ment of Secretary of State. = Besides his military and departmental experiences, (Gastan served as residence counseller, library clerk, and computer programmer while at the University of Ottawa; counsellor ford Education Canada; assistant coordinator and sport specialist © for the Department of Recreation, city of Vanire; volunteer : probation officer for the Ministry of Community and Social Ser vices. Gaetan has trained hard and long, and is prepared to som. plish the difficult task of serving his people 'and his native North as their Federal Representative in Ottawa.
