MARCH 22, 1978 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 11 ORIGINS OF NAMES Miss Judy Kuromoto of the Department of Natural Resources, Scarborough, Ontario, was in the village of Rossport recently, seeking information re the naming of small inland lakes and streams north of Rossport and lakes on the islands in the bay. At one time these numerous lakes did not have a name unless some local guide or man in the area tacked on some sort of identification. Finally the Conservation Club in the 1940's undertook the naming of the dozens of lakes. This organization is now known as the Game and Fish Association. Among some of the streams and lakes given names are -- Ault Lake and creek after our first chief Fire Ranger situated at Pays Plat siding; Todesco Lake after the Rossport merchant Charles Todesco; Josephine and the Kenney Lakes after Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kenney; Hewitson River after an early school teacher - JoF. Hewitson; Hiller lake after a commercial fisherman Ted Hiller; Cathy Lake after the wife of Indian Chief Jerry Bou- chard of the mission; Dan's Lake after Daniel Gerow; Bear Trap Lake because it resembles the shape of a bear trap; Harry's Lake after Harry Tympko a storekeeper; Eli's Lake after Eli King a fisherman; Lesarge Lake after a fisherman; Jim's Lake after Jimmy Paulmert a fisherman and Sky Lake because it is at the top of a high hill. ------ -------- -------------- -- 3 WO GD Sn AT WG Se -------- Linda Singleton, whose marriage to Robert (Bob) Bryson, took place on March 18th, was honoured at a community shower tea held in St. John's Anglican Church Hall on March 11th. Receiving with her was her mother, Mrs. Simonne Singleton; Miss Nancy Armstrong; Mrs. Flora Bryson (Bob's mother) and Mrs. Arlie Rumley of Wiarton (Bob's grandmother). The servitors were Mesdames Jewel Riley, Debbie Schmiedchen, Cathy McGrath, Sandra Commisso and Jo-Anne LaPointe. Replenishing were Mesdames Beth Miller, Hazel Bailey, Anne Miller, Barbara Davey and Marilyn Moher. The gifts were opened by Mrs. Diane Long and Judy Moher. Mrs. Lorette McParland, who presided, thanked all those who had worked and/or donated to the most successful bake sale and penny auction, Many thank-you notes, including one from Birchwood Terrace -senior citizens and a letter fron a family on the Save-a-Fanily plan in India were read, Kay Stefurak reported recent enrolment of sixteen Brownies, bringing membership to thirty-one, Guide Leaders are desper- ately needed. Mrs. Stefurak and Mrs, Leanne Beaupariant will be co=conven- ors for the St. Patrick's Day tea in the Town Hall. "Mrs, Glor- ia Mullins is kitchen convener.
