JUNE 1, 1977 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 3 VANDALISM: Cont'd from page 2 The students covered 2,200 miles in 7 days and all agreed that the journey was most valuable educationally. Defensive Driving: The Ministry of Transpor -tation and Communications has introduced a system of classification of drivers' licences relating skills to the type of vehicle driven. Effective the first of September 1977, school bus drivers will require an E-type licence and teachers will also need an E-type licence to drive a 10-24 passenger vehicle. It is hoped that courses will be run between now and the end of August for those who require these new licences. NORTHERN AFFAIRS BY JIM TRISTRA ; The Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations administer the Gasoline Handling Act. The Gasoline Handling Act, has now been ; amended to require that commencing Jan. 1976, metal -portable containers will be governed by the same requirement as plastic portable containers and may only have gasoline or nap- tha placed in them if they bear the label of the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) or of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) This simplifies control by the service sta ~-tion operator because now if you ask to have gasoline put into a container of metal or plastic it must be CSA or ULC approved or it. will not be filled. A service station operator who puts gasoline into a customer's non-labeled container is breaking the law and is liable for a heavy fine. So, all old met- al gasoline cans that do not have these CSA or ULC labels are now illegal. To many : snowmobilers, boaters, motorcyclists, etc., this will mean purchasing new containers. This law is intended to promote more safe handling of gasoline in small quantities - which has been an area of much concern due to the number of accidents over the ryears. This law is now being enforced by the Ener --gy Branch of the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations.
