Dear Joanne: Relative to our recent phone conversation, the mail delivery service on the "north shore" has at last been explained. I think many cit- izens will welcome this information, and I would appreciate it if you can find space for this letter. This morning I was called to the office of * our local Postmistress, Miss Barbara Haughn to be questioned as to the basis for my remarks to you about distribution of mail from this office. I was informed that Schreiber, Ter- race Bay, Marathon, Manitouwadge and one or two other north shore communities maintain a "red bag" or mutual exchange of mail bags, once a day - a procedure waich apparently is closely monitored by the offices. involved. Thus, any alleged delays in local mail - delivery cannot be blamed on our post offices. Yours 'truly, (signed) E.M. Hubelit. NORTHERN AFFAIRS BY JIM TRISTRAM The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture -pub- ~lishes many brochures and fact sheets that will help the home gardener at this time of the year. One of the fact sheets is "Compost & Com- posting" which explains this long recognized valuable soil additive. Composting is a tried and proven method of improving soil tex- ture as well as fertilizing the soil and best of all you can produce the compost yourself. Other fact sheets available include "Weed Killers for Lawns", "Sun Shy Garden Plants" and "Tree Wells and Retaining Walls". For maintaining lawns we have a brochure entitled "Lawns" and fact sheet called "Selec- ting and Operating Your Lawn Mower". "Lawns" is a 43 page boolket covering lawn establish- ment, lawn grass species, seed mixtures, seed- ing, sodding and care of established lawns. As well we have a pamphlet called "Garden Iri- ses" . to page 3
