DECEMBER I, 1976 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 5 SCHOOL NEWS ESTON - ELROSE BAND PERFORMS AT LAKE SUPERIOR HIGH: - En route to the Grey Cup, the Eston Elrose Band gave a con- cert at lake Superior High School, Students from both campuses] assembled at the Terrace Bay Campus for the performance. The Eston-Elrose Honor Band has the distinotion of being the first rural band to represent Saskatchewan at the Grey Cup, Formed four years ago, the band has I8 students from the Elrose school, 47 students from the Eston school, and II stu- dents from the Kyle school, The members range in age from I2 to I7 years. ' Members of the Honor Band were chosen from 350 students participating in the band program offered through the School Unit, Under this program, all Grade 5 students receive one year of band instruction. Students in Grades 6 to I2 may choose to continue in the band program. Band rehearsals are integrated into the school curriculum; however, students make their own arrangements for sectional practises. Auditions are held each year for membership in the Honor Band and Jazz En- semble, During I976 Eston Elrese Honor Band took top marks in com petition at the Kinsmen International Band Festival in Moose Jaw, the Saskatchewan Band Directors! Provincial Competition in Swift Current, and local music festivals in Eston and Kerr- obert, ; : d Mr. larry Pearen of Eston has been the Band Director since the Unit Band's inception four years ago, and works closely with Mr. Lyle Dewan in his second year at Elrose, and Mr, Mark Mazur a new-comer to Kyle. It was inspiring to see such a venture underteken by two communities with populations of 400 and I200, The finances for the band sre received from their school board, grand mon- ies, donations from the communities and personal contributions by the band members, The band marched into the gym and performed a Walt Disney salute as the band surrounded the audience. Once on stage, the following selections were played: Fiddler on the Roof, Instent Concert, Classic Miniatures, Variation Overture, Homecoming, My Way, the Rockford Files, The Hussle and Traces. The concert was enjoyed by both students and staff who will no doubt be watching for the Eston Elrose Band in the Grey Cup Parade. ~ PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY DAY: ; On Monday, I976 II 22 teachers of lake Superior High School held a Professional Activity Day. The morning session involved the assessment of the mid semester marks of the first year students. These marks were related to the course selections made by the students, It was felt at the end of the session that ninety six percent of the first year students were enroll- in courses of the correst level of difficulty. In the afternoon all Departments met. The various agendas included topics such as methodology, evaluation, teaching techniques, examinations, marking sessions courses of study, eto. It was an extremely profitable day for all teachers, PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS: It was gratifying to see the number of interested parents who attended leke Superior High School for Parent Teacher Parents visited with their sons/dsughters teachers to discuss the marks on the mid semester reports, Interviews on Thursday evening.
