The Property Sales and Pensioner tax credits are intended to improve the fairmess of the provincial and municipal tax systems. Property tax and retail sales tax tend to place a pro- portionately heavier burden on persons with lower incomes than on those with higher incomes. The impact of the proper- ty tax is particularly burdensome for elderly persons on fixed incomes. Thus, the net amount of Property, Sales and Pen- sioners tax credits available depends upon the taxfiler's family circumstances, age, income and the property tax or rent paid in the year, subject to an overall maximum of $500. Taxfilers who are 65 of age or older may be eligible for all three of these tax credits. The Property, Sales and Pensioner tax credits may be claim -ed even if the taxfiler has no taxable income for income tax purposes. The Political Contribution Tax Credit is designed to encous rage greater public participation in the democratic process.
