WOMEN'S YEAR AWARD: Her old friends in Schreiber and Thunder Bay will be pleased to hear Mrs. Otto Thompson (nee McCuaig) recently received the Creed's. International Women's Year Award. in ceremon- ies at the close of the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in Nathan Phillips Square. Mrs. Thompson is a Sunday painter, an amateur now in her 80's and has one major opportunity each year to show her work to a large audience. Nothing has stopped her in I4 years in setting up her stand at the outdoor art exhibition. She almost missed out this year though be- cause of a major surgical operation, but she was released from hospital in time to hear on radio that she was one of the big prize winn- ers. The news prompted her to tuck her winning painting under her arm and join I60 other art- ists for a preview showing at the Four Seasons Sheraton Hotel. Most of the 400 artists taking part in the three-day exhibition are amateurs like Mrs. Thompson, but an important contingent was present from the ranks of the established pro- fessionals. The show has become the biggest outdoor art event of its kind in Canada. CHIMO CLUB Schreiber Chimo Club, to mark senior citi- zens' week, entertained I9 members from the Red Rock Club and ten from Nipigon, at a dinn- er and social evening held in the town hall. George Birch, president of the Schreiber club, was elected zone chairman. Don Anderson, OPP constable, showed a film on Safety, stressing precautions regarding 'homes, with good running commentary. Another appearance of the Chimo Dancing Girls was uproariously applauded, their attire gay and well-displayed but unfortunately the nobby knees also seen detracted greatly from their nimble footwork. In the act were George Birch, Huck Gerow, Joe Campbell, Mike Churney, and Tommy Bolan. Two streakers, behind the times, appeared briefly, and too fleet of foot to be captured. A round of jokes and anecdotes was enjoyed { with everyone contributing and Joe Campbell recited the well known "A House is Not a Home" Winners in the several contests included Mike Churney, Annie Niemi, Lois Cote, Selina Lambert, Boyd Manson, Etta Gerow and Lois H Cote. ; Mrs. Harriet McBride of White Rock, B.C. and Mrs. Etta Gray of Thunder Bay were visit- ors at the event. TR SCHREIBER WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: 2 Mrs. Anne Todesco presided at the June meet- ing of the Schreiber Women's Institute. Mem- bers answered the roll call by donating an article made from one yard of material or flour bag and a recipe for the bridal book. Motte - "A recipe however good or bad, depends on how you make it.". National current events and local plans for Senior Citizens Week were discussed. A lett- er of appreciation was received from the Cancer Society for donations to the Cancer cupboard. A note from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food sent its regrets at not being able to pre- sent its course in needlecraft which the bran- ch requested. Information was received regarding the Area Convention in Fort Frances on September 9 & IO ¢ Mrs. Wesley Clemens was appointed delegate.
