PAGE 8 TERRACE BAY NEWS AUGUST I4, 1974 so bent on introducing the great "American" ethic known as competition. Where everything: depends on being at least one full step ahead of the other guys. Organized competition in tennis, where the kids are open to comparision to their peers will only serve to turn 99% of them off for good. How many boys by the time they reach sixteen hang up their hockey skates permantely simply because the competition is too keen. By all means play the game and play to win, but don't make winning such an obsession that it turns those who lose completely against the game. The recreation department has gone out of its way to create an interest in tennis. I too feel that I helped accomplish this inter- est in the handful of kids I instructed. But why destroy this interest by creating compet- ition where only "one" person win for every ten that lose. From teaching these kids I know that the difference in ability is very pronounced. It is not necessary to point out to the ones with the lesser ability that they don't measure up. Especially in front of their parents and the older kids. By the time a person reaches his sixteenth birthday most of his or her interests are de- veloped. He's entered organized sport because its adult sponsored only to quit it forever simply because he isn't "good enough". Why must tennis go the way of every other sport. Interest in tennis should be promoted but - not over promoted. Introduce competition even tournament but let the kids run them. - Alan Rowntree Terrace Bay EDITOR'S NOTE: As Editor I would like to state I am in complete disagreement with Mr. Rowntree. Terrace Bay is more than fortunate to have the Recreation facilities we do and the direc- tion which is available in "organizing" our athletic programs. In growing up in Terrace Bay the saying "It doesn't matter if you win or lose - its how you play the game" has stuck with me - so this gives me an indication the "winning" "end of competition was not all that greatly stressed. I also believe athletic stars such as Billie-Jean King were not formed by "organiz- ing" their own programs. In my view it would be nice to have a Terr- ace Bay Youth become a member of the "World Beginners Pool - continued cold make-up water which has to be put in every It appears that the water loss is due to day. a leak in the casing of the pool. The casing will be inspected very shortly, and hopefully, we can resolve this problem and offer the use of the Beginners pool to the young children of our community. Newspaper Editor Terrace Bay, Ontario Canada Dear Sir: Two years ago my wife and I slowly drove from dense fog Bay. We stayed and had a wonderful time in Terrace at the motel on the north side of Lake Superior and on the south edge of the highway ... large globe lights outside, dining room overlooking the lake, 2 bars, a huge fern in front of the stone fireplace, a French- Canadian bartender. Now, a friend vacationing in Ontario claims she couldn't find this beautiful motel. IS IT STILL THERE? This fall we plan to return to Kimberly-Clark country and to Thunder Bay's Ukranians and maybe a tour of Winnipeg. But our first goal is the motel in Terrace Bay. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Dean Kurken, Minnesota. Tennis Team!" And I am sure we are all proud of our own Charlie Simmer who has made the National Hockey League. Would anyone else in the community like to state their views on this matter - lets hear from you - just be sure and sign your letter (please make it legible). - The Editor. Consumers' Corner Billing Errors A bill that is more or less than you calculated may be due to an error. How do such errors occur? Billing time lag may be one reason. A bill statement may be prepared several days before it is mailed. Any purchases made during this time lag will not be on the statement. Also, any pay- ments on the bill during this time lag period will not be re- corded either. If time lag isn't the cause, check to make sure you have not made an error. Have you re- corded all the charges on the ac- count? Perhaps another member of the family made charges and forgot to mention it, Returned checks, for whatever reason, may also cause a billing discrepancy. Stores can make billing errors, too. So check all your sales slips to make sure there are no mis- representations at the time of purchase and when your copies are returned to you at billing time. HR. ia ob
